Shipping Containers

The problem with this might be that ever since the Hive went astray, VO people might have been careful with providing true AI to critical equipment and goods, 'look... no hands'.

I can see it now... Noobs running around killing collectors, not a care in the world... then BAM!!! rammed by a rogue shipping container.

Love every aspect of the idea...

I really, REALLY want to see the mauds get the cargo container expansions that were originally intended for them...

From this I only see two uses for cargo containers.

1. To hold items outside of there ships

2. To have other people ship cargo but the buyer knows no one messed with it.

Just make it so if a ship hits one of these in space, the container bounces off doing no damage to either. To keep space clean, give the cargo containers hp.

Also unless its some high security crate, anyone should be able to open it and sell its contents. The only problem is that once you open it, the container will lose its security mark so the recievers will be able to tell someone opened it.

In addition to that, the crates should have an unlimited life span. That way if someone wanted to, they could store unlimited cargo where ever they want. They just have to make sureits a good spot so no one finds there secret stash. This will probably be used by people that can't afford a capital ship.

No, not unlimited time. We don't want to pollute this universe, do we (and provide a way to circumvent the impending station storage room restrictions)? I'd say that if they timed out within one week after being dropped by a capital ship, or after staying within the same sector for one week, it'd beample time to wait for the rght moment to sell, or find a better place to do so.

Another thing that occurred to me was this: We should be able to change the container's contents while we are in space. Naturally, only towing ships could do that. Still, this would allow for larger mining hauls, because the jockeying back and forth between a 'resourde drop-off' (station) would be reduced a bit.

Yeah, some ships should have the facilities needed, but not all.
As for the lifetime, even a week would cause major pollution! Two hours, maybe? If you want it to live longer, rent space in a station.

A day?

Waffle, a great short story about what might happen (with something a bit bigger than a shipping container, granted) is CJ Cherryh's _The Sandman, the Tinman, and the BettyB_.

toshiro, have a look at this thread and envision how it would look with shipping containers.

If they are to last long, they have to be expensive. If they're expensive they'll get stolen...
...which might be a good thing!

If they don't last long, they have less justification for existing than if they do (mining resource drop-off).

The problem mentioned in the thread you linked to will be solved once weapons are stackable. Designing the containers for the state the game is currently in would be incredibly myopic.

I agree, but if they are large (and they should be), then dropping them one by one outside the station can obstruct a persons view fairly fast.

The problem can easily be solved by making them expensive. As little as 1000c would make people think twice about just dumping them like that.

Oh, of course. I even think that's too low a price. Anything from VCR 5k up to 15k would be OK by me.

Yeeargh! Avaste, a way to bury me precious booty. This would finally provide a way to live out my fantasies of being a pirate in LazyTown. Ye' could make maps to yer buried treasure.
