I wasn't around for the cap ship beam weapons, but my understanding was that the instant speed and all encompassing tracking made them "fire and forget" so to speak weapon. If they functioned anything like mining beams currently do, then Impavid you are way off topic. What you have in mind isn't even vaguely related to either Lecter's spike, or my close range gun.
whatever. i just want to see beam wepaons implimented VERY SOON.
devs now that you can make new addons moar easely (and beamguns already exist even tho they suck) make a small port gun that has a 1 sec refire rate has as much auto aim as rails is an INSTANT hit does 800 damage and takes up 20~40 energy to shoot
and some more tweaking if nessesary

personally i think mining beams should only fire dead straight foward anyway. Then add a power slider to them that upps the drain (wich should already be 15 per second or so). This way if i shot at sombody mining they can rack up the power and take a swing at me.

OK, let's look at primitive mining beam stats:
Mining Beam
Port: Small
Range: 100m
Rate: 1
Heat: 1.5
Rate/Heat: 0.67
Mass: 500kg
License: -/-/-/-/-
We can't use it as a weapon for now, because it doesn't deal any damage.
I suggest that Heat parameter of all mining beams start to take damage and Rate could be taken as damage calc param too. For example: DPS=Rate/Heat*100.
So, if Heat ratio is 1.5, Rate is 1, then DPS is 67. Then miners could defend themself from aggression and good mining beam could be used as weapon and then some corps will be able to research ones as a weapon.
Range should be fixed. I think it should be 50 or better 30, instead of standard 100 and then devs could leave "180 degree rule" for mining beams.

Someone invented the rotating gun turret.
And the ramming ship was exposed to direct fire while attacking, and if the defender evaded, it would have all side of ship to attack. See it at wikipedia.
unless you are looking for a knife fight, the ram attack would required full turbo on. Maybe cause a small "turbo lock on" while attacking. To justify maximum damage, your ship's speed is usable energy. And therefore, expose you sideways if defender evade.
also, give it NO autoaim, only forward attack.

I think there's sense in leaving "180 degree rule" for beams but with very low range, because even miners will be able to use it against NPC's or even in PVP, while piloting hog mineral extractor, Tunguska Mineral Marauder, etc. All miners need then is to jettison all cargo and stand up for fight.

I think the idea of using mining beams as weapons is ok, because it will give 'Colts' to unarmed miners' hands first of all.. As I said before, corporations can develop real weapons (like ram or lance) based on mining beam technologies.
Keep your warmongering hands off my mining beams. They are not and should never be weapons.
