Real Flags
Hopefully another simple suggestion. I've noticed people playing capture the flag quit a bit. There is a lot of guess-work for everyone involved. Who has the flag, etc?
How about a real "flag" that could be purchased at stations which would cause the carrier's ship to glow. Maybe similar to the shield effect? It would be really nice if it caused the flag carrier to show up on radar differently, also. Perhaps with a yellow circle around the flag carrier's radar dot?
Even a partial implementation of this would be helpful.

Hey, i would love this! Just one qidget for me and Joyce, since we run the event. And it can be made easy too! Problem is some dingleberry might steal it. But if the guides/devs are fine with that or can work around that somehow, I'd like a REAL flag, yes.

How heavy is it?
Twice the weight of samoflange is what I'd make it.
I remember the old one wouldn't let you turbo. Better than any samo, but meh.
Yeah, I would like to see that as well. At least with twice the weight of a samoflange widget, it should affect the ship's movement considerably, unless you use, say, an SCP or a Valkyrie.
Maybe make it 10cu/unit or something, so only cargo ships can carry it? Not sure wexactly what you're after, but something to consider.
But, would it stand out from other cargo crates?
Which just gave me another irrelevant idea; player run scavenger hunts!

The original flag didn't differ from cargo crates on radar (which is why people used cargo to camouflage it). On screen, it was a blueish ball surrounded by lightning (crazy-ass lightning, I tells ya).
Making it cargo ship-only would be definitely a good idea.

The support is there. THe ability to make the widget is there. Hell, I'm half certain the old flag data is still there.
Only thing that stands in the way are some logical arguments...
...like what happens if it's stolen?

This is where the "we need event-guides" bit might come in...
The "event-guide" would be able to provide a list of character names to the event script or whatever, and ONLY those characters would be able to pick up the flag. Simplest way out on paper, not necessarily in code.

Vote "Teh Ninny!".
Temporary Guide Powers (woo! TPG variation) would work, as well, with the benefit of not requiring special additions code-wise, or so I hope.
S/he could oper/kill everyone not allowed to grab who does.

Maybe the flag explodes your ship if you leave the arena?
Arenas, TGP, and flags.
If a certain group of people vote someone to be their Temporary Guide Apostle, then they have the option to "Launch from Arena" in the station menu, whereupon they're transported to an instance system, or something. The Apostle's powers include spawning flags, 'n stuff.
On second thought, I don't really like this idea, but someone might.
