Mining Beam SFX
c'mon, you know they need it... whoever heard of silent conveyor beams anyway? give 'em a cool sound.
Space=silent!
Remove the energy wep sfx! :D
Bwahahaha
*what can't I troll at least once?*

For the rest of us who care more about immersion and fun factor that strictly realistic physics though, mining beams need love too.

boo!!!
Well actually the argument I was expecting was: Even if you are in space the beam is actually on the ship, so the vibrations (and therefore some sort of sound) would stll be there for the pilot to feel (or hear)

I think i'll raise that point right now.

wow, who me, you made that observation just as zed posted his. Just immediately. :P
And yes, if you are in space, you can hear whatever is in or attached to your ship. Unless you have a soundproof cockpit.

I was just about to say that. But real spaceship manufactures use sound dampening to remove all sound, so no sound no vibration. Sorry guys it's just not feasible to have mining beams make noise. ;)
lol
This thread is sooo serious :)

if that was true captain waffles, then how do we hear exploidos and energy shots?
eh? eh?
eh? eh?
besides, all those puffs of evaporated ore ought to yield some minor shock-waves on your hull. thus more sound.
Or, we could have certain weapons only have a delay of sound because of distance. Of course light travels faster than sound in a vacuum, so this only makes sense. It could be like that awesome scene in Star Wars Episode III (I think it was that one) where suddenly the concussion mines are seen before they're heard, because it was perfect for continuity and not distracting at all. That would be good for immersion, and since George Lucas did it, we know it must be a good idea.
<Zathras> Computer?
<Computer> Yes?
<Zathras> Increase aural feedback of gravidar data
<Computer> What?
<Zathras> You're sensing the gravitational signature of weapons, passing engines and stuff, converting it to aural feedback for my piloting gear, so I become more immersed in the information I need to effectively pilot a spaceship, right?
<Computer> ... eh, sure... something like that, yeah.
<Zathras> Well, do it louder.
<Computer> Ah. Adjusting the sound effects settings to 100%... Why didn't you just say so?!
Seriously, tho'... Mining beams should have a sound like rocks falling into sand, mixed with a lightsaber, or something. It should sound like we're grinding up rock and pulling it in with a gravity beam.

Good idea, but make it somewhat quiet as I leave it while I'm sleeping...
<Zathras> Computer? Disable aural feedback of gravidar data
<Computer> Gah, that again? You mean "Turn off sound effects", right?
<Zathras> ... ok :(
<Computer> Done. Sleep well!

<Jim Kirk> Computer, disable emotion chip that you borrowed from data.
<Computer> Oh, the one time I get anything for myself you have to go and order me to turn it off. No I won't turn it off. Computer do this, Computer do that. I'm tired of doing what you tell me to and not having any say in it like I don't matter in this relationship. I'm just like one of your Yomans, like Yoman Rand! At least you allow her the decency to hear her talk-
