There are many things that would be standard in a 44th century ship ;) say autopilot :D
Let's dispel a couple of rumors.
As far as pirating goes, it's absurd to think two different pilots in different positions would have exit vectors identical enough to run into one another, unless the two pilots were very close together in the first place (200 or so meters, me thinks). Besides, if you're that close you can pretty much assume with today's HUD that the exit the trader's aiming for is in the direction he/she's turboing for.
This function needs to be set to the off position to keep newbies from thinking they *have* to visit the particular point to jump outta' space. This way, someone has to intentionally dig around in the options, and experiment to switch it on. Besides, it wouldn't realy matter because any direction they end up going in will automatically turn into the nearest exit vector by the time they hit 3000m. You'd think they'd eventually figure it out... and a tutorial wouldn't hurt neither.
No, you can't just "eye it", because asteroids come in varying sizes and at varying distances. Eyeing it consists of checking the distance of many asteroids that you presume are within 3,000 or so meters, doing the 3 dimensional angles in your head, and taking your best guess. Sure, it works out alright most of the time, but really gets annoying once you figure out how easy it would be to make a program for it.
It would only help pirates if you're dumb enough to use it when it is better to not be predictable, and it will hurt pirates who depend on it. Correct. More features, so long as they remain optional, can only increase possibilities in game play. Arguing that adding this in this little HUD outfit would hinder gameplay is similar like trying to reason out that Flight-Assist mode and Mouse-Look ought to be removed for making flying too easy. Only if you're dumb enough to use it when it is better to not be predictable.
I got to thinking about this very concept when I realized the specific convoy I was escorting was taking a very extended, and most unnecessary detour almost parallel to a set of 'roids. Besides that, the moments when I'd most need this outfit (while being chased) is precicely the time when I won't be flying near a convoy route, and when I don't have the time to just 'eyeball' it.
And finally something constructive: I read lately an idea that went a little something like this; You could make specific models of the ship that'd come with the feature. Maybe anything with a Mk II or above, or whatever. Might help to keep it out of newbie hands until they're ready.

I once escorted a convoy who flew to a sweet spot in Azek I-16 where you hit 3000m pretty quickly, but if you don't jump in about five seconds you encounter another gravity field. That's what I thought they knew better than us.
Super's idea of further versions of a ship having more "features" intriguing; it would certainly keep confusing gagdets or features from falling into newbie hands too soon.

Now now, 'twas FatStrat85's idea, and a barking good one should you ask me. Observe this post, it may just spark some creative inspiration, albeit it doesn't relate directly to the topic at hand here. http://www.vendetta-online.com/x/msgboard/3/15276?page=#192263
And if someone would refresh my memory on the command we use for linking, I'd be much obliged.

I say make it a small port add-on.
