Force People to Check "Read here before posting"?

Is it possible for the devs to implement something that prevents you from posting on Suggestions until you read the "Read here before posting" post? Personally I don't mind all the "Let's have _____" x 50 posts we get, but it must be a bit depressing to work so hard on your idea only to be met with "You IDIOT! Read here before posting, dork! All you NUBS do this!"

(This is not in response to the Cockpit View thread, it just made me think of this)

It becomes like the EULA then: Check and move on, never read.

Ironically enough this point has already been raised.

yup, would simply become an ignore doodlyhikey...

i would rather have a "rejected ideas" sticky list to keep some noobs from suggesting items that never were retained in the suggested list.

like:

"bribe marshal to get temporary guide powers"

i'm sure that would be rejected :-)

The difference between a EULA and this is that even if people read it, no one pay attention to it. If people were forced to acknowledge the presence of a "Read here before posting" thread I bet it would help a lot. There'd still be people who would just skip it, but I would guess that more people would read it for fear of taking flak when their idea gets shot down. I know a lot of people (myself included) who, when they join a message board, won't post for any time from a week to a month for fear of posting something "n00bish."

I think a lot of the problem is people just don't see the thread. If people DO see it and still post, I would be very surprised, as 3 of the first 5 items on the list come up a lot. At the very least I'd bet that if n00bs were forced to see this page, none of the first five would come up in any new threads.

Well, there is ONE way to cease these repetitive suggestions, these things that it seems EVERY player with enough balls to post about seems to want so badly, these hints that new players drop once they've played the game for a bit. After they've seen the potential, and want to contribute to the game's success, they inevitably say the same things: Landing on Planets, User-owned Stations, New Alien Opponents, Cloaking Devices, New Sectors to Explore, you all know the drill.

There's ONE way to permanently stop the suggestions.

Implement them.

^^^^

All of the above, BUT....

NOT LANDING ON PLANETS! Noooooooo!

what if there was only one link from the BE NICE thing that went straight to the read before posting thing and a timer that made sure that you stay on the read before posting thing for a certain amount of time if you have been playing vendetta for only a short time or arent subscribed yet.

Timer's are super dumb, no offense :P

What I was thinking is either something similar to a EULA where you just click "I have read", or the devs program the boards so that you have to have looked at that post before you can post in suggestions.

Yeah I don't want landing on planets either. Cause planets ARE HUUUUGE. A single planet would have as much playable Area as the whole "playable" universe we have so far. And um, with the number of planets?

Unless you guys mean landing on planets = docking to a station? 'Cause I really am not sure that the ships we got are capable of athmosphere reentry... Well the backstory says they are but... Only the Vulture and maybe the centurion look anywhere close to aerodynamic.

I know the zone are "infinte" but for me a zone finishes when the roids finish, after that it's just empty

And about the "Forcing people to read". I wouldn't want this forum to get too complicated, if you have to read something before you can post, meh annoying ;)

I think more people would heed the Be Nice page if it had real teeth. The website's not set up to deal with users who become a problem. There's a workaround, but it's not a very good one.

As for Suggestions, it would be nice if the first few visits to the Suggestions forum took the user to the "Read Here" thread. Or perhaps the thread could be flashing or another color. I put the thread together more than a year ago - I'm kind of over being upset that new users don't see it.

Or, better yet...

make the lil frackers read the goddamn thing before they get to the goddamn forum.

After-all... it's much easier for us to all BE NICE, if we're not constantly faced with tripe that's being re-hashed for the eighteenth time. Thus, to ensure nicety, the "READ THIS BEFORE SHOOTING OFF YER N00B YAP!" should take priority in mandatoriness.

Lol, I was going to post this a week ago, but had a feeling it was already suggested...

The "READ HERE..." post should red or something.

I wonder why most newbs don't read that post anyway. I did extensively before making my first suggestion...

Nope, all you need is something like THIS:
(Click here to open up image of this idea in new window.)

Simply making a special link underneath the title would be sufficient, the "Dunce" idea is really only there to make fun of smittens.

All FM would need to do is modify a plain-text HTML file with the suggestions, instead of modifying the current pinned and locked post. I don't know how often that post is updated, anyway.

I like a combination of Lex's, and Smittens' ideas. Make them click on the "I read it" thingie, if they still insist on making a new thread instead of looking for the existing one, they earn the DUNCE tag.
Nov 09, 2006 Demonen link
What if I suggest something that is similar to a previous suggestion, but not similar enough for it to match any searches or even a read of the READ BEFORE thread?
What tag does that earn me?
Where is the line drawn?

I'd rather the devs implemented some way of splicing threads so any suggestion allready made could just be appended to the existing thread.
Users are more than good enough at digging up the relevant forum link, all we need is the mod to splice them.

I add new links to the "Read This First" thread when it becomes obvious to me that something that gets referenced frequently is missing from the list. I added something this week, in fact. I have not been updating existing links.
Nov 09, 2006 smittens link
Demonen, I think Lexy's suggestion of a dunce cap was more of a joke. Such an icon would do more damage in my opinion than a hundred "READ BEFORE POSTING DORK!!!" replies.

Did you read all the posts? We aren't saying there should be a requirement to read it, nor a punishment if someone posts something similar. All I'm suggesting (and has been suggested by others) is some way to direct peoples' attentions to the "Read Here Before Posting" thread, as many people seem to just not see it.

It seems appropriate to rehash this.

Frankly this line sums it up "I have not searched if this was posted before...". People, the Devs put time when building this site to put in search function, however faulty it may be. Failing that, the great Whistler has taken time to wade through a lot (imho) of junk to find the nuggets and post links to them, alphabetically even!
