Glance behind
How about a command to briefly look behind you without having to spin the ship - a glance back button? I don't think a glance up/down/right/left would be needed, but it'd be nice to be able to check my six quickly without having to turn around.
Use /set fov 179
Da. :-D

Wow, that reminds me of highschool.
Hit brakes and afterburner, turn ship (mouselook on), turn back, release afterburner and brakes. In this order.
If you want to move whilst doing that (I suppose you want to do that whilst traveling), it's even easier; just use mouselook.

We know how to do it. But a function to do it all without having to use the mouse would be nice.
Go to the scrapyard, get a rearview mirror from some broken car. Take it home, and find some sort of clamp, and clamp the mirror to the top of your monitor. You don't even need any buttons to glance behind you.
I find myself doing a "lifesaver" whenever i launch, or turn right at a roid
I disagree. We should not get bet a button to do that. There's stuff way more important than this.
toshiro, you mean the buttons to look left and right? *wink*
Just because there is other more important stuff doesn't mean that this one is a bad idea. I think it would be dead useful :)

Exactly, metadoll! Also, we direly need a button that changes our napkins in-flight, so we don't have to dock with stations for that. And while we're at it, make a targetting computer that lets us shoot in any given direction and still hit the enemy, like in The Fifth Element.
(I believe here "napkins" is meant to mean "diapers", and not the things Americans use to wipe their mouths with at meals - AKA "serviettes".)
Americans wipe thir mouths with napkins? Ewwww!
Write an alias that toggles between fisheye view and regular view and bind it.
Speaking of napkins, what if some ships, especially cap ships if they have passengers, can't launch without being stocked with lemon-soaked napkins for the passengers' convenience? They could be kept in suspended animation with occaisional breaks for tea and biscuits until the napkins are stocked and the ship can launch.
Err... yes, diapers. Thanks for clearing the mists, Whistler.
And PC's suggestion definitely needs looking at. Once we can land on planets, there should be Frogstars and all that stuff. And maybe depressed little robots.

Most other 3D games have multiple views. I normally just hold the turbo button while I mouse look, but a hot key would be nice. I did try playing with the field of view setting once, but trying to get 360 fov gave me strange results. I agree that there should be at least a rear view.
(It would appear to me that many limitations of the game engine are intentional and targeted at scripters.)
