Flak Guns
There should be real flak guns. The rounds would be explosive on impact and force the hit ship to move back a bit if its medium sized. The ammo would be around 30 or something and only use one to fire a shotgun-like shell with the explosive rounds inside. This would make taking down capships and faster fighters a little easier.

I'd much rather have a huge rail gun to use against cap ships. They are slow-moving, so the shotgun characteristics wouldn't matter so much.
Also, such a gun might make it too easy in 'dogfights', since they're even more forgiving of bad aim than flares are.

a flak gun is an anti-aircraft weapon and, as such, it should only be used on capships (and space stations) as a defense against fast fighters
it does not make sense to a fighter to carry such a weapon due to a more limited ammo storage capability and/or energy generation (in the case of energy weapons which, in VO, are virtually unlimited)
it does make sense to capships to have it though, since the weapons capships currently have are more effective against other capships than against fighters.

Maybe if they ever put in Light Frigates (around the size of a moth but slightly larger) they could use those as a special weapons port for that size of ship but could still be used on station defense platforms and capships.
your own ship would be thrown back with a gun like that
Carlos Medina, we already have light frigates, namely the Trident. What you are asking for, are corvettes or gunships.
