Vendetta Online is a really grand game and one of the reasons it's so strong is because of it's use of reality in the game. When I sit down at my computer to sign on, I'm not just starting up the game; I am the pilot turning on his ship's computers and HUD. -- I don't think a cockpit is necessary on screen because I already have one; It's my computer screen and keyboard. Now, I didn't write the game, but to me it seems like a lot of these pilots probably have little dinky key boards that connect them to frequencies for contacting other pilots, the text of which, appears on their HUD.
This is also the reason why I don't think it's necessary to have the ability to get up out of your ship and walk around in a space station, it’s because you are your character and if you were to see yourself walking around right before your eyes, it would take you out of the realm of the game.
Being able to sit in my cockpit physically and look out into space makes me so immersed in the game's mythology, I can become my character entirely. Whenever I am talking to someone during the game, they don’t refer to me by my real name, or think about who I am outside of VO, because that doesn’t exist; the same way an actor’s life doesn’t exist while he is assuming the role of his or her character in the workings of the world they are set in.
Vendetta Online is a leap in not only gaming, but in storytelling. I've studied a lot of elements of writing, as well as Greek and Mesopotamian Mythology, and by god, not only is the story of VO a masterpiece in it's own right, I find it amazing how I can now become apart of the story being told... I'm not just reading or watching it, I can change things and help to propel it forward.
I'm sorry if I strayed a little off topic, but seriously Guild Software... you guys have done something great.
Keep up the good work.
