Faction Benefits (Re-Hash)

Jul 11, 2006 lucifex link
Sooo I'm walking --Very Bored-- And I start thinking about how to give factions benefits given the current system.

So, the typical kind of ideas run through my head...

Itani- slight gain to maneuverability
Serco- increase to firing rate
UIT- Increased access to electronics modifications to ships

and then I thought, hell, why stop there,

what if players could choose 1 major faction, and 3 minor ones.

So they'd get the best benefits from the 1 major one they chose, and far reduced ones for the rest.

For Example, My character:

Shape
Lingering effect: Former itani (small gain to maneuverability)
-Smaller than someone who has maintained their itani affiliation

Major Faction: Corvus (must be less than -600 with the 3 major factions)

-(MAJOR Perk) Access to otherwise unavailable pirate electronics, AKA electronics with a distinctly aggressive perspective
-(MINOR Perk) Neutral to Unbots
-(MAJOR Perk) Allied with Unbots, Available as Escort Hires
-(MINOR Perk) Purchaseable capital ships through guild, provided all members average +700 Corvus faction

Minor Faction: Orion Heavy Manufacturing (Must be +700 with either itani or serco --see wiki-- or must have +700 Corvus faction, (since they partake in corporate espionage) for full benefits)

-(MAJOR Perk) Allows Purchaseable Escorts
-(MAJOR Perk) Allow purchaseable upgrades which will, for example, remove unused cargo space, and the mass that it takes up. Or, can convert cargo space into an additional weapons port.
(I would not have access to these major perks)

-(MINOR Perk) Will perform weapon upgrades on blasters, allowing upgrades in damage at the expense of rate of fire, or vice versa.

Minor Faction: Tunguska Heavy Mining (Must be +900 with Tunguska to allow Minor Faction affiliation, for Major Affiliation, One cannot have more than +3000 faction points distributed in any other set of factions)

-(MAJOR Perk) Access to Tunguska Light Frigates.
-(MAJOR Perk) Access to Tunguska Improved Radar, (A UI upgrade which allows you to view Radar in depth)
-(MAJOR Perk) Crafting Technology

-(MINOR Perk) Cargo upgrades (force you to add additional mass)

Minor Faction: Axia Technology Corp (Must be -600 with Valent, or if Valent faction exists, Axia must be the Major faction and pilot must have +700 Corvus faction(SPY))

-(MAJOR Perk) Access to Axia escorts
-(MAJOR Perk) Access to Axia Weapon Velocity upgrades

-(MINOR Perk) Access to Axia electronics

-------------------------------

In order to maintain the major faction, you would need to do periodic missions for them.

While you could have as much faction as you like with ALL the factions, you would not be able to get all the faction benefits unless you met their requirements.

There's a lot of room to maneuver with this, this is just a starting point.

Mkay, sounds interesting enough I will have to think about it some more... I would at LEAST note that having +990 standing with ALL factions should still give significant benefits in total over not having such high standing with everyone. I will post something more in depth later...

I think there should be bonuses for anti faction standing. i.e. if i have -600 axia standing, biocom grants me a bonus.
Jul 11, 2006 lucifex link
Yeah, well, on what I wrote earlier, Look at corvus, you have to have -600 with all three major factions to get those bonuses

Didn't genka just have a post in another thread where he said something about acting respectable? Come to think of it, I think he mentioned maturity in there somewhere too... huh, weird.

I suppose Ghost is right.
+2 is altogether too much for night elves.

What can I say, I just carried away by burning and eternal love for legolas. I'm sure you understand.

Um I don't wana introduce choices :( their so hard to make and I always choose wrong!

/me cries
Jul 12, 2006 lucifex link
Well, that's the idea in theory, no bad choices... Just ones that further a character identity

Sorry. This has already been suggested a few times already. It always ends up with a couple of people supporting it, and everyone else slamming it for going against the skill-based nature of VO.

Me, I hate the idea. But there you go.
Jul 14, 2006 Shapenaji link
umm, actually, this doesn't go against the skill based nature of it at all.

It just lets you create more interesting weapons, or get access to devices through factions.

I mean, if you want to go about flying multicolored busses instead of some kind of diversity, or ignore the wealth of opportunities that crafting or upgrading ships would allow, well, ...ok

but realize that it doesn't take away from the skill of it.

Battlefield 2 has a number of these options, and its entirely skill-based.

Did you READ the benefits I suggested?

I have no idea why anyone would think these suggestions (or faction specific rewards) would effect skill at any level whatsoever.
Jul 16, 2006 LostCommander link
Anything that differentiates characters affects skill at some level -- even color choices depending on the background of a fight. That said, it is the magnitude of skill modifications that matter. I would be willing to guess that anyone in a standard govbus would likely be owned by anyone who had finished the trial if given an SCP with an ultra bat, a chaos swarm, and 2 AAPBs...

As such, one needs to be concerned with how skill modifications should be doled out and how they should be balanced.
