Yeah, gotta agree with Gav here.
While I happen to take pride in my pk/death ratio. I'd really prefer if the system was less transparent. Its FAR too easy to determine alts, which takes away from the Role-playing ability of my characters.
Every time I create a new character, I have to deal with a few major things.
A) I can't fight as hard as I usually would, since that would give me a pk/death ratio which would tag me as a vet. And
B)with my Beta badge (something which also annoys me since there are like 5 active players with beta badges), it makes it obvious who I am.
My Ideal would be what Holden suggested, have callsigns not be immediately visible. (Perhaps only visible to guildmates/groupmates/those of similar faction standing or people with SCANNING DEVICES). Although Guild tag would still be visible.
That way, when you jump into a sector, if you're itani, and you see a serco pilot, you won't immediately know who it is.
It could be an inexperienced pilot, or it could be a battle-hardened vet.
People won't be able to rely on friendships to keep them out of fights. And so the UIT/Serco/Itani conflict will actually have a reason to resume.
Hiding information is one of the most important parts of immersion. Its what creates the need for recon, the need to develop more interesting strategies.
I direct any further comments to the "Fog of War" feature in Warcraft.
P.S. - (How much does it suck when someone says on channel 100 "Shape is at Latos H2" and suddenly, no one shows up anymore, except to duel. If they just said "Pirate at Latos H2" I think people would be more inclined to try their odds)

I think you should be able to set your transponder to say anything you want. Of course, all the nations equip their trasponders/radars with encripted codes, so you can say your uit, but a true uit will know better. Likewise, all legal identities are regestered with a standard encription verification databases, so you can say your shape, or your in the syn guild, but it won't verify as shape or syn. If fact, it will make you flash red/yellow identifing you as a doppleganger (read: shoot on sight or run). Of course, if you see some one that just has thier transpondered turned off, or fails to report nation standings, you might want to start shooting/running anyway. But it might still be a nice feature to have.
I'm with TRS on this one: I say leave it be... the devs got more important things to deal with.
Also, stats are cool.
...and having to log out just to look up a piece of data would be annoying.
Re: Shape;
Wouldn't fighting hard without a pk/death ratio still tag you as a vet? Combat in VO is such that you can sometimes determine what player you are up against by the tactics they use, much less whether or not they are a vet.
