Stations inside Planet atmospheres
(Has this been suggested before?)
There should be a sector somewhere that's COMPLETELY inside a gas giant planet's atmosphere. you know, with visibility dropping off with distance and all.
I'm thinking specifically along the lines of Odia M-14, with Corvus Hold actually orbiting INSIDE the massive atmosphere of the giant orange gas giant planet Kraz. Radar would work fine, but actual visibility would be, oh I dunno, 500 m.
Whaddya think?

As long as you don't factor in physics of the planet.
Wait, wait.
Scratch that.
Give us gravity!
That'd rock having to strafe against the pull!

Do you also want drag from being in the atmosphere? Anything not a Vulture will drop like a rock...
Nah, no drag, no gravity. Add that in later. Just orange atmospheric fog. Not even fog, really, just haze.
Not even haze.
Maybe a boggish mist?
Maybe a boggish mist?
..like a nebula?
That does seem to be where this is heading, thurisaz...
It would seem that an orbiting station's orbit counteracts the gravity of the planet it is orbiting :)
So any ships in the vicinity with the same relative velocity as the station would not drop to the planet unless they decreased speed considerably.
Orbital mechanics, don't you just love em... :D
I think the vendetta engine isn't quite up to this chapter yet.
But, personally, I'm a fan of keeping it simple and fun, the physics model isn't realistic anyway, so who cares? Let's have lot's of stations right above (or just inside) planets, makes sense too.
Speaking about physics, ships in vendetta behave somewhat like they are in a fluid substance (like a sub in the water) e.g. when you don't fire the engine, they tend to stop dead after a while. Not like space at all, but, on the bright side, this 'substantial' universe is a perfect excuse for sound in space :)
/quaint notion

It's because their engines are non-newtonian. As such, the ships would be able to sustain their position even in atmosphere without trouble. Drag and gravity could just be introduced as additional decelerating effects.
Other than that, I agree with Gnypatul, except for the fact that as soon as you enter parts of the atmosphere with significant density, orbit decays real quick.

I'd like the record to show that I did NOT say the "n" word. It was thurisaz!
And, why can't this happen in 1 sector?
And if we can't have this, can we at least get the space Hobos? Just put a "Hobo" in front of their random NPC name, and make it their goal to find and dock with whatever trident they can locate.

Or... just make it dense enough that Bouyant force is the primary acting force :P
Ooo! I think the foggish mist in some sectors is a great idea! And it should block radar! And then you can accidentally smash into roids! And it should appear in some WH sectors and when the WH opens a big swash of mist should bubble open the clear space and send ripples though the cloud that disappate as they move. And it would be sweet if weapon's fire caused HUGE bright blooms! And it would be killer if there was lightening that could wound your ship, like the nebula in Wrath of Khan!
Oh, the planet thing is cool too.

No, no blocking the radar entirely. The radar is your eyes and ears, especially in the back of your head. Decrease its range to 1km, but not disable it entirely. And i like the idea of nebulas...
What you're thinking of is a nebula, tumble, and I would like to see us flying in one. Maybe with the explore add-on, a wormhole hidden inside the nebula...
And not blocking the radar; rather, make it show far more contacts, and make it sometimes lose the target lock, and maybe the autoaim and missile lock-on too.

/me rolls a natural 1
"Your missiles not only lose their lock on but target you instead as a hostile"
Nebulae would be good

I would love to see something like this
Yes great idea....all of them.....but for now just putting the odia m14 station into orange fog would be cool :)
I KNOW!
A BLACK HOLE!
Which leads you to millions of bots, only way you get out is die :p

I absolutely adore this idea (including both occasionally losing autoaim and missile lock). :S
