well, it's plausable...

May 29, 2006 drdoak007 link
the one thing that has irked me when flying around is not seeing light-streaks when i hit turbo.

you see it in almost every movie/tv show, and you get accustomed to it...

it doesnt have to go ludacris speed (goin' plaid) like in spaceballs, but imo something like star trek's quick-back then forward-streak would be cool to see.

Well, considering that when you hit turbo, the fastest you can go is 220 metres/second, and the speed of light is 299,792,458 metres/second (in a complete vacuum), then I think it might be a bit of a stretch of the old artistic license to add light warping to turbo.

Motion blur to the Space Junk might be interesting, although probably quite intense on the rendering side of things.

Just a slight vibration (shaking) of the display might be sufficient to give you that "speed rush".

Yap, just the shakes should be enough. And the word is "plausible" :P

if you change your post from 'turboing' to 'jumping between sectors' or 'jumping through wormholes', i am totally with you.

btw shaking is caused by atmospheric interference with the airflow over a vehicle. afaik in space accleration is typically very smooth.

Not necessarily if the engines are, in fact, creating gravitational anomalies.

Now, why would the engines be particularily smooth when you're overpowering them for sporratic bursts? The thrust would probably not be very uniform if you're doing that, so I could see a lot of shaking... especially if you have more than one engine on the craft.

Crossing a set velocity with afterburner on causes more vibration in a jet than with it off - the only difference is the thrust and acceleration.

And yea, I stand by what Shape said as far as warping goes...

thats true, but uhm, i think the shaking effect would get really old really fast.

you might as well add 'recoil' effects from firing weapons
May 29, 2006 toshiro link
Why shouldn't there be recoil?

energy leaves the ship, hence, the ship would feel a burst of momentum backward. Clearly they're quite high energy otherwise they wouldn't cause so much damage, and with the number that we fire...

Yeah, Recoil seems quite plausible.

But that's the point, Shape. Somehow, the current weapons are a futuristically large amount of energy embodied in relatively no mass.

Game. Vendetta is a GAME. Game!

Game!

But, I like eye candy. Sure, give us streaks like in Homeworld when we turbo. That would be neato. Leave the sci-fi explanations to the player's imaginations.
May 30, 2006 jexkerome link
Yeah, right. You obviously forget the mess about the "escape pod system" over at the RP forums.

If we're going with stupid eye candy for the sake of stupid eye candy, make them pretty women! Just as useful, and far more interesting than streaks of light.

Give me RATIONAL eye candy. It's a game, yes, but whenever possible, I like to keep my suspension of disbelief intact.

I dunno, I tend to chalk up things I can't believe to tequila-induced haze.

Anyway, RATIONAL eye candy it is!
Hows about the gravimetric drives create a localized blueshift around the matter right next to the drive, which has to be vented as exhaust.
When you turbo (i.e. put gravimetric drive into overdrive), there's much more blueshifted mass coming out and therefore longer "streaks" behind your ship.

Blue Streak oughta like this one. Heh.

I suggested this about two years ago and got called a newb and told nah! Well, I still think something like the *going really fast* effect in some car games i know might be neat, even if its just on space debris n roids! Now I know that these effects can push the system specs higher, but thats what options to turn them off are for! ah yeah, ever tried hamering it down the A6 at 130mph on a motorbike at 3am? I have, and it does get blurry, cos like, eyes are shit and they don't run Lunix and be l33t and stuff.

Yoda, yer a newb.

Hee heeeeee. I love psuedo-science.
Softy, got that warp drive workin' yet? Hahahaha.
