It's time for a Moth varient!
Can we have a much slower, much higher cargo capacity varient? Maybe a non turreted version of the Moth Heavy?
I onlt see three things wrong with the cargo ships we have now:
a) There is really no way to keep a transport alive against a determend attack, no matter how many escort you have.
b) there is not enuf higher end risk vs reward cargos that justify needing and paying for escorts.
c) and... not nessasaraly the fault of the ships, there are no real threats in nations space (too justify escorts).
you could make a moth with 100,000 armor and carries 600 cu, but only travels at 55m/s. but that does nothing for point c.
I suggest a new widgit that cost 100,000, weighs 10,000, and has a profit of 10,000+, that you can only buy from deep grey.
It would still be nice to have some kind of ship that was very slow and very well armored, but with enuf capacity to make it worth hiring escort (and worth pirating).

I think it is a great idea, you've clearly thought about it, though i don't think the speed and armor should be so different, maybe 50k armor, and 75m/s. Other than that, I see no problem with this at all. Although a Moth varient would have to have somewhere near the same amt. of cargo, a completely new ship design is needed to properly match its attributes.
I posted on moth variants a while back: http://www.vendetta-online.com/x/msgboard/3/13439?page=2#170419
@TRS: Anything more than 240 cu should require a capship. It would definitely be cool to have tridents flying around grey w/ 100k/cu widgets!
Here were my suggested stats for moth variants:
"Current moth, (should be called prototype because it sucks like the raptor):
Armor: 20,000
Cargo: 120
Weapons: 2 Large
Mass: 30,000
Thrust: 550
Speed: 65
Turbo: 160
Drain: 50
Behemoth MkI, (suggested basic):
Armor: 40,000
Cargo: 120
Weapons: 2 Large
Mass: 30,000
Thrust: 600
Speed: 60
Turbo: 150
Drain: 50
Behemoth MkII, (suggested Bulk Transport):
Armor: 50,000
Cargo: 240
Weapons: 1 Large
Mass: 50,000
Thrust: 1000
Speed: 50
Turbo: 120
Drain: 50
Behemoth MkIII, (suggested mining and maybe faction variant):
Armor: 16,000
Cargo: 120
Weapons: 2 Large, 1 Small
Mass: 30,000
Thrust: 750
Speed: 60
Turbo: 160
Drain: 60"

I've seen you suggested varients before. I think they are all too fast.

So you're going to make a widget that's HEAVIER than samoflange, costs about the same, but sells with only a 10% profit margin?
I'm sorry, but if you lost even 1 in 10 shipments, you'd be out money, and when your moth takes 10 minutes to reach 100m/sec IN GREYSPACE, you're gonna lose a LOT more than that. Nobody would ever buy it. EVER (except to turn their moths into uber-heavy projectile weapons - it's the new and improved Samo!). I'd be suprised if more than 1 in 20 actually made it out of grey given an enormous escort and mad armor.
I see too much eagerness to feed the pirates (Hi tumblemonster!) in this thread.
I mean, I appreciate danger in trading, as well as profit to pirates, but come on, we gotta make you work at least a LITTLE for it...

aye, too fast.
I would like to encourage escorting. that means something that can be defended, needs defending, and make enuf profit to pay the defenders. I don't see any of your ships fitting that description. Your 240cu would become the new defacto standard.
My idea was to give the standard line of ships more cargo options.

A standard moth could transport 360 cu. the energy requirements would really slow it down, and it would be defenceless, but hey, isn't that what we are looking for? A rag could transport 600cu (if a moth assisted in loading), albet at a snails pace, but again, what are we looking to accomplish here?

TRS, it's called Samoflange.
Sells for 100k (Yep, from Smittens)
Weighs 10k kg (Abouts, maybe a bit more)
Profit of over 10k (If you resell it...)

You can't buy samaflange anywhere...
I don't think there is any kind of pirate bias in this thread. I make a large percentage of my money trading, just as many pirates do. Fund the fun, as it were. But I don't think high capacity trade vessels should be as fast as lower capacity vessels. This was always the problem when the moth came out. It was the best of both worlds, way too fast for it's size, and no one used anything else. Now that it's been nerfed, we're seeing a little more of the smaller faster trade ships. Any new moth varient introduced has to give and take. If it takes more cargo capacity, it has to give speed, acceleration, and/or armor. If I see a cargo vessel moving 1000cu of cargo, it better accelerate really slow and it's top speed should be catchable in a light fighter without turbo.
