Subsystems on frigates (for border skirmish)
I know the idea of subsystems a la Homeworld is not new. It would just make border skirmish more interesting.
Only been suggested a million times. Next time TRY reading the thread so gernerically named "PLEASE READ PRIOR TO POSTING SUGGESTIONS"
Other than that, I'm sure the devs have this in their plans...

Yes, working towards that. Subsystems for smaller ships too. <evil grin>.
Kickass.
Sorry, never played Homeworld. What do you mean by subsystems? As in, certain ammounts/locations of damage cause ship functions to fail?
Like when the cap loses a turrent?
Stupid Knat knocked out my Excelsior's impulse engines on the first shot! Grrrr...
Much more fun when I'm the Knat. :)

Wow it's in the pipe! Great!
tumblemonster, there is a description of HW subsystems on this page: http://www.rakrent.com/rtsc/html/hwii3_02.htm At border skirmish, you could for example disable the engines of enemy frigates heading to the hot spots or destroy a fire control turret, reducing the accuracy of the frig weapons.

personally, i think itd be cool if the 4 big guns on the teradon could be blown off seperately- anchor them to the main hull and give them each their own separate HP and body.
stuff like that could make for some REALLY cool "boss" fights, if the ability for these parts to be warped in and attached or built on at key points in the mission was put in. even with something like a teradon, if all 4 big guns were sploded, you could have it shed the side panels, and make the exhaust ports (thats the white glowy things) vulnerable to destruction (thus disabling some of the gravitic drive for each.) but at the same time reveal 3-4 new turrets on the side of each, guarding them.
if each capital-size ship had a distinct weakness like this, i think it'd add a lot to the twitch hook vendetta has. i think implementing these achilles heel subsystems is a neat idea, but it could be taken so much further than "hit engine, slow ship down." so long as its not some death-star terminal ultimate weakness, itd be awesome fun for both sides. the last thing we need are lucky potshots exploding an HAC as easily as a wingbug.

Why don't those giant orange hurt-balls come from destructable turrets is what I want to know...

If the subsystems are 'just' going to be achilles heels for the cap ships, I'll feel sad. The way they are in Homeworld, they greatly improve the parent ship's production or battle abilities. It would be nice to see such things happening in VO, too.
