Making Basic Gameplay FREE
Was wondering if maybe making the basic gameplay of VENDETTA FREE for people. the trial offered is not enough time to get emerged into the game itself and by the time you have mastered most of the game your time is up. I think it would draw more people into this game if it were like ANARCHY ONLINE it is FREE for the basic gameplay. And it lets you subscribe to the major parts and addons of their game after you have mastered it. At least you have the option of doing this.

"On another note, if we stopped billing we would instantly go out of business. We don't really have a lot of financial breathing room for trying new models right now."
It is not possible for the developers of VO to cease billing. If they did, they would be unable to support their servers, and the VO universe would collapse. Then nobody would be able to play it.
I'm a proud supporter of Guild software, and can say without hesitation that it's well worth the investment.

The point of the trial is to let you try out the game. If after 8 hours you start getting into the game then it is time to start paying for the game.
While it is unfortunate that you are unable to afford the $10 for subscription, the developers cannot afford to offer the game for free.
Guild Software already has a lower price point than most other online games.
Unsubscribed members require additional supervision and use resources. Vendetta will have to rely on a stable, subscribing playerbase.

no, no and no. Can't afford 6 bucks a month? Honestly, how old are you?
Age<10: Beg your parents for money, if that doesn't work, wait till you're ten.
Age>10: Mow ONE person's lawn or babysit for ONE night, and you'll have enough for at least TWO months of VO.
I hate games like Anarchy that you can't play the full game unless you buy this, and this and oh, what a surprise, I also have to by that and that and that and that!
Vendetta, the trial's cool because however much you can do in 8 hours is however much of the game you get to try. Past that, you pay with the rest of the playerbase.

this game already almost completely collapsed a few years back when it was free, I don't mind paying to keep it running.
I'll pay the $10 to play. However, I'd bet that it's usually the kids without credit cards that a) are a giant untapped resource, and b) clamor for free games because they don't have any way to pay besides parental units.
Although it *is* tough to go ask mom and/or dad to use their credit card to go give to this Midwest American gaming company, and this will be a recurring charge every month.
Doesn't Visa BUXX card work? (http://www.visabuxx.com) How about The Allow Card from MasterCard? (http://www.allowcard.com/) Does Guild support those payment methods? If not, wow I think you're missing out.
But, I agree with some of the players here: No aspect of gameplay should be free save for the 8-hour trial. Like they said in "Joe Dirt":
It's a business. It ain't UNICEF.

There is no such thing as basic gameplay. You pay for subscription and you get everything. You don't pay for subscription and you get evevything for 8 hours.
And you can always start another trial account.

wait a second....
let us think about this a little bit...
on the one hand, none of us really care about someone that has nothing to contribute. let's just take that as a given. this isn't a charity.
on the other hand, just because someone can't pay, doesn't mean they can't contribute. if anyone can figure out how a non-paying customer can effectivly contribute, then we may have a winner.
example 1: bring a buddy system: if (x) new paying customers refer to you as thier referance to vo, and maintain thier accounts in good standing for at least (y) months, you get (z) free month(s).
example 2: mentor reward: a free month for every (x) mentor points.
help me out here people. if some one can not pay directly, how can we still convert them into cash? what can they do to bring new customers or help retain existing customers. there could be a gold mine in here somewhere...

"Guild Software already has a lower price point than most other online games. "
AND they're doing it without big corporate backing or distribution and advertising! Man, talk about record low profit margins! It's a wonder that VO is still around at all.
"example 2: mentor reward: a free month for every (x) mentor points."
No. Heck, mentor points are EXPLOITABLE. and they always will be! As long as they exist, players can pay creds for mentor points and convert them into free game time. What's more, that would only make it harder for people to get mentor points for actually mentoring people - think of the competition...
I do agree with many here that the 8-hour trila isn't long enough to give a good presentation of the game, much less to get someone hooked, especially if they log on during off-peak hours. For that reason, I'd suggest extending it to 12 hours.

TRS, when somebody registers for the trial version, they get free access to the message board. This means that even if some one doesn't pay, they can still contribute to the positive vibe we want the boards to give, and this also means that Enforcer1958 does get something for free.
TRS said: on the other hand, just because someone can't pay, doesn't mean they can't contribute. if anyone can figure out how a non-paying customer can effectivly contribute, then we may have a winner.
No, I think payment is the lone contribution.Seriously.
As far as mentor points, like the wild Cunjo said, they're exploitable. PLUS, no one on a trial account would ever be able to mentor anyone. So if they don't PAY for a month in the first place, they'd never be able to mentor. So it's a chicken/egg argument.
Referrals are tricky. Assuming that someone who has no credit card or can't convince their parents to pop for it DOES recruit people, they'll most likely recruit the SAME kind of people. (i.e. people who want something for nothing)
Can't we just find a nice dissatisfied base of players who ALREADY pay for something (I'm thinking along the lines of EVE, EV:Nova or EnB here), and use guerilla tactics to sway them to play Vendetta as well? I mean, when it's ready. Not until the devs say "go" and unleash us (their minions) onto the gaming world.
Vendetta has this cool "vibe" right now of a kickass MMORPG game that not too many people know about. It's lurking... like a grue with slavering fangs... Soon the unsuspecting mass of online gamers will have their lamp go out. It will be dark, and they'll walk right into Vendetta. </zork analogy>

Zork analogies FTW
What's with this 'the wild Cunjo' thing now Leebs? not satisfied with just calling me by my name now? =P
VO has the combat model that no other MMORPG has, seriously. There HAS to be a huge market for that... the only problem is that it hasn't been exploited yet, and those countless suckers playing (and slightly dissatisfied with) games like WoW don't want to try anything new.

What I fear is that some other people will come and snatch the twitch market from right under your fingers, Guild.
Please, oh pretty please, bring the game to a marketable state, up trial time to 16 hours ingame time and have your publisher (if you have one) get the marketing-types rolling.
Oh, and just say the word, and we Linux people will plaster your names on every geeksite known to man. That's what we do.
As for the free "Basic gameplay" of AO... it sucks.
The graphics screams 1999, the "missions" are all the same, the other players are either utterly clueless fr00bs (like myself) or elitist snobs. Sure, there are four nice people in AO, and I happen to know two of them, but that makes me special, not AO.
There's a reason AO sucks, too: It's free. The devs there don't care about AO "classic". They want money, so they develop content for the paying expansions.
Maybe in 5 years, when VO is huge and "VO: Planets", "VO: 5th Dimention" and "VO: SpaceStation FPS!" are released, then maybe, just maybe, I'll be all for a free "VO: Classic".
Until then: Don't take the food off the devs table, please. If you want it free, make your own ORPG.
That's my ... 3940347 cents :P

I think VO is more on the MMOG side of the spectrum than right now =P

Coonie: In EV:Nova, you're hunting "The Wild Cunjo", not just a "Cunjo".
Lheeboor, I'm aware of that =P
PS. You realize what this game would be like with fr00bs everywhere? You could say goodbye to the intelligent conversation around theoretical physics on 100 that is VO's trademark if that ever happened...
Just say No to fr00bs.
