Inviso-ship

May 12, 2006 Alpha001 link
Ya know what really bugs me about vendetta online? I CAN'T SEE THE INSIDEOF MY SHIP!!!! Ifyou've ever played any of the X series you'll know what im talking about. If you havn't then ill explain it. When Im in my ship I wnt to actually see all the little knobs and dials and things that you normally see in any futuristic space craft. (note to the devs. Don't go overboard with knobs and things in the ships if you impliment my idea like X2)

This is the futur man.

The outside view and HUD are projected directly in your retina!

Eh.

Do you like my idea or what?

Good idea, only been suggested a quarter million times before, and on the list of if-we-had-a-hundred-more-devs stuff. Keep posting your ideas though!

I actually prefer the way vendetta does it now... it's something unique and different, and it's explained nicely in the backstory.

It seems to me you have an Unlimited amount of Clones, cause they are so cheap.

And your clone is updated every time you dock.

Yeah, I think we'd get sued for that ^ one ;)

but still, the HUD makes sense since Serco and UIT are 'plugged into the ship', and Itani have psychic interfaces or something :P

Ahh, not all uit's, though, read the backstory carefully there.

I know, but most of them you'd think.

Those that don't might have some other equivalent, either by one of the other sides' technologies or something of their own.

Alpha, do you have an alt named either "Mr. Pot" or "Mr. Kettle"?

Anyhow, the HUD design is in the process of being re-worked. It would be nice if we were able to skin more areas of the screen - that way people could make their cockpit if they enjoy that, while others could go minimalist.

NO that is not my name

this has to be the only game community that wouldn't rip alpha001 to shreds.

its amazing how one incoherent and unoriginal suggestions thread can remind you why you love most of the other players

Showing ship insides A) uses up polygons and shaders fairly uselessly and B) blocks HUD space that could be used for visibility (oh no! that incoming rocket was blocked by the artistic windshield-support-strut model). But it does C) add some immersion. In my opinion, A and B outweighed C, so we didn't do the ship-interior-HUD thing. By way of explanation, our ships use cameras and direct feeds to the pilot's helmet. Which is good, since some of our ships don't even have "windshields" of any kind, and are completely armored.

Makes total sense, the way Incarnate explains it. Also, if you have been around for enough time to see how space sims evolved, they indeed moved from pretty cockpit graphics to HUDs like the ones we have now, that relay a bunch of information while allowing for visibility across all the screen. I thought it weird the first time I encountered it (I remember the option being present in the X Wing series, but I didn't like it at the time) but became accustomed to it during Freespace. Now, if given the option between pretty cockpit graphics and maximum visibility, I'll choose the latter.
