I think the story needs to take a step forward

Some of the events like the Deneb Run can be easily incorporated into the game (Momerath's been tinkering with a Deneb Run mission, IIRC)

... yep, he has. It was used in last week's Run, I think.

my personal list of things that could make the backstory that i've seen since i joined:

the deneb run,
the NSI debocal (with some edditing)
the SKV blockade
the Dr. Lector trial

now the things those all have in common are their high profile. the NSI and Dr. Lector events both required a sepcial widget and news posts. The SKV blockade only became interesting because a number of UIT players made very vocal protests regarding it. and the Deneb Run is a recuring event that has filled the "sporting event" role, in public opinion and interest.

now the way is see it is this: ordinary players and guides create the RP cvontent and then the Devs based on public opinion and theirt own prefrences, decide which events are worthy of being added to the backstory.

Q said; i'd say the key is to have good guides with the power to create missions, widgets, NPC's etc. but also it requires players (be they actual guides or just deputy guides of some sort) who are willing to play NPC characters.

I'd be willing to play NPC characters, that would be fun as hell.

Content stuff I'm looking forward too along these lines would be missions such as "The battle of Edras". The mission could be taken days in advance and would specify a time and date as well as location for the battle. Each team has a specific goal to accomplish like "destroy x number of transports in x ammount of time" or "destroy x ship". But my personal favorite would be a timed scenario where each team tries to gain more kills than the other team. At the end of the time limit, the team with the best kill/death ratio wins. Yeah, pretty much your standard FPS game scenario.

But now for the RP part. The results of these battles or FPS shootouts would affect the advancement of the story as well as other RP events. "Hero of X Battle" medals and news reports could be incorporated as well as added to the storyline for future content.

Of course the "shootouts" wouldn't be the only type of events to occur, but things in that direction. I just like the idea of taking missions days in advance so that it gives everyone ample time to show up.

Battle of Edras, Ghost? Who do you expect to be fighting, crazed furies?

Regardless, I do see what you are suggesting, and (for the most part) I agree.

I'll be happy if the IA-VPR-BLAK war gets a mention. Ah, those were fun times.

I'm just waiting for the opportunity to play NPC "*Valent Assault ND-4472", and hang around in the Sedina Levi sector, waiting for unsuspecting players to scare the crap out of. Hahaha.

Or even better, play an NPC Xangi-Xi trident in one of the escort missions, and take the players on a roundabout journey thru Itani space.

I was just using edras as an example, visitor. =P

LeberMac,
i more acuaretly meant that you might play say "General Bashik of Serco Sky Command" who is being escorted to a TPG station in grey space to oversee the construction of a Serco variant of the Teradon.

then Serco players could signe up as escorts and Itani/Akaniesse players could join an ambiush mission. but because the general is being played by an actual player, he can use various escape tricks and the chat interfase to create a much more imersive and intereting mission. now for realisam's sake General Bashik should have obsenely high lisences and a number of badges, but leveling the character legitamately would be prohibitivly difficult, so the best solution is to have a guide (or a trusted non guide player) create the character and then use some of those /oper commands to set the character up with apropriate privlages.

the need for players as NPCs comes in larger scale events where there are several key people (perhaps on several sides) that should be handled as NPCs in order to protect the integrity of the event, but who should be able to think and act like a real person.

of coarse the ocasional bot with the skills of a player would be a nice change of pace as well.

[edit] and this should be seen as taking PC/NPC intergcahgbility a setp further. that NPC you see might not be just an AI bit rather a guide or deputy guide playing a specific and probably temprary role.
