Voiceovers?

Another suggestion!

How about some voice overs for the game? You could have random voice overs and also voice overs that go with missions.

For example, when you enter a faction's (UIT, Itani, Serco) space, you could receive a broadcast. When you enter sectors with pirates they could hail you before they attack.

Missions (like escorts) can have voice overs.

The possibilities are endless, and I think voice overs would really help immerse players into the VO environment.

Players could also hotkey specific voice overs like SOS calls, etc.

I think this has been suggested before...

While it would be pretty neat, it could quite possibly dramatically increase the client download size (unless Guild decided to make the voices as an add-on pack, which is possible).

There are some other difficulties involved as well, such as finding the voice actors. The types of voice clips would have to be fairly diverse as well with quality in mind. In other words, you would have to make a LOT of recordings for all of the various things that would be said/broadcasted throughout the universe.

But perhaps there could be just a few clips that were included with the client - just for the main things (like docking/undocking computer voices... or entering a nation's border, as you suggested).

Maybe somebody wants to revive it. IIRc they had a really nice selection of speech snippets already.

I think there are some TTS engines for all systems... so all you need to do is parse errors.log and give parts of it to TTS engine

(TTS == text-to-speech)

I dunno about on other OSs, but that would be useless under Linux because there's a noticable delay for festival (the leading TTS engine) between when you send it the data and it speaks. On the order of 3 seconds for my Athlon64 X2. I wouldn't want to hear the text 3 seconds later.
