Asteroids - The Game!

It occured to me, whilst in Sedina with some other fellows (and someone else inspired this idea, though i can't recall whom) -

We have ships with blasters.
We have plenty of Asteroids.
We have many unused sectors.

What about making a special sector - where the roids could be damaged, and act like a 3D/FPS version of the arcade classic.

I don't know how to code, but I'm thinking that in theory, it shouldn't be to difficult (could be very very wrong). Pick an empty sector - define "Roid mkII" - populate sector with "Roid mkII" - and have Roid MkII fragment after being hit with a weapon (limit to a special "Roid Destroyer"?)

Honestly, I don't know how much design change it would take to pull this off as an ingame feature. Maybe it could be a seperate game based on the VO engine accessible from a menu (thus, no PvP - just a seperate small arcade game within VO).

I believe that the problem was the impossibility of the server being able to keep track of which EVERY asteroid going where, when, and how fast.

Like the 2D version, you would need to limit the number of roids and the max number of resulting fragments. Doing the 2D screen wraparound in 3D could be a bit freaky...

Don't forget the extra points available when the Bunchies UFO makes an appearance...

Put the "Astroids Game" in an arena... 6 forcefields, sized 1000x1000x1000. The forcefields bounce back astroids. You score for every destroyed 'roid, and new 'roids are launced into the arena regularly.

colliding with a 'roid damages you.

The more roids you destroy the more roids are shot into the arena, so it gets harder.

Once you start noone else can enter, but you can leave the arena.

If you leave the arena or are destroyed the game resets. Keep score to see who's best :)

Best add a station to the sector so you don't have to fly all the way back every time. Make it sell you back your ship *if you are destroyed in the arena* Otherwise, you get a bus :)

that'd be fairly easy for the devs noid ^-^ the astroids already have collision meshes, and the like....'tis really be good for noobs training...damn..

Why not have both?
But I think the astroids one is easyer to implement for the devs...

We could have a whole arcade game system ;)

Re: The Noid, regarding the station and the bus:

a special station that ONLY sells the bus! Park your ship, take a bus on the roid mission.

an otherwise useless station where the asteroids game is a "mission" - does a devwarp to a sector 0 kind of thing - special otherwise inaccessible sector - something of that nature.

I love the Bunchies UFO idea regardless.

Sounds wonderful. Perhaps if you get too many points then a Levi gets tossed in instead of a UFO? hehehe...

To make it look as much as possible like the original, players should be restricted to using a Hornet (the resemblance is uncanny :))

Oh, and in-system jumps inside the roid area should cause a random jump to another location inside the roid area (including, half the time, a jump into a roid).
