All Hail The Pyramid
Ah, the pyramid scheme...
How about, one month free for inviting 3 players who become paying customers?
If you think about it, the maximum loss is $10, being if the recruiter is not going to play much. However, it is more likely than not that the recruiter is a big fan. They're probably on the 6 or 12 month plan, only a $7 loss there. And it's very probable that the invited players are trying it out for $10/mo.
If you think 3 is too little make it 5, but don't go too high. You dev's can thank me later with several free months... maybe then ViciousNanite would come back to grace you all. =p

been suggested before, and in other varieties as well.
I personally would rather see in-game (non-advantageous) rewards for it so that we don't have to be a hole in the dev's pocket =P

a lot of people avoid any games where they get officially "referred".
i think it would be a bad move

Heya ViciousNanite! I've been keepin yer roid warm for ya!
Anyway, It's not a bad deal to use MLM schemes like this to gain an initial push, but you need to provide value to the people who sign up, like $2 off monthly fees for 3 months or whatever.
Make the discount for the "top-of-pyramid" people based on the contribution of the players they recruit. Say, $1 per month per player you recruit, up to your limit to make your monthly fee "free". Further recruits would not decrease your fee into the negative, obviously. However, you could recruit 100 people and those people would still gain the limited-time discount rate.
If there's no benefit to being referred (i.e. it costs the same either way), no one will care about being referred, and the scheme will fall apart. If there's no benefit to recruit players (i.e. no "bonus" of a $1 monthly fee reduction), then no one will bother to do it, and the scheme will fall apart.
