Scale
I not aware if had been brought up before but from what I can tell the system of scale is waaayyyy off the stations if as large as the asteroids around it the ships we pilot are the size of cities.
I know the idea of scale isn’t all that big of a deal but when it comes to my idea of immersion I have a hard time "getting into it" with my single person ship being so large to the rest of the world.
I'm sorry if this is a topic that has been beaten into the ground and I am trying to show you something I think is a new thing (like some one at your office trying to show you a all your base vid) but I was talking with a friend at the office and how I would love to "work" on a space MMO and she flatly rejected my idea saying I don’t have the skill you write my own MMO engine/system, so I thought I would put my two cents in on a space MMO that’s listening.
:edit:
Let me start off by saying I dont want to offend any one by my next few statments but I find the UI to be bulky and unwielding, the full screen windows have so much space that is not used it leaves me with this blueish feild distorting what could be a great view of a station or something else, I also am bothered by the large chat boxs that will not go away or fade away when idle, i had read on the forums some where about ideas of a modualer UI and I personaly feel that is a step in the right direction and as this is the "sujestion" forum I have a sujestion of what my idea of the HUD could look like (note I'm aware it looks like crap just wanted to get the idea across.) here http://www.bluecomputersystems.net/HUD.jpg .

I'm not sure what you mean by the asteroid scale. There are small asteroids and large asteroids. The very smallest is about the size of most of the ships. The biggest is much larger than any of the stations (although the big ones are fairly uncommon). We don't have any truly gigantic asteroids, due to various technical/graphical limitations, although it's something we would like.
I've posted this before. can't find the thread right now. But stations are actually pretty large.

Although I wouldn't mind them beeing bigger and more complex. <.<
edit: about the ui. I think you can tweak the ui to your hearts delight one day.
this was done in about 6 lines of lua (in the beta client):

(if I could figure out the event handler it'd actually work right >.<)

hmm that UI layout looks very familiar.... was WOW your inspiration?
Scale has been brought up before, and yes, I would agree that it's not 100% in line with what you would expect.
Having said that, I think you are the absolute first person who felt the stations were too large.
I have noticed that all the player ships are somewhat 'normalized' in size, meaning that no matter what ship you are in, they are all roughly the same - Compare the Centaur with a Vulture. Side by side in the game, one MIGHT come close to being twice the size of the other, but if you look at the cockpit areas, one clearly houses humanoids of a larger size than the other. But if I recall, this was done in part as an effort in balancing play. You can't have all the Centaurs shot up simply because they are too large a target, etc. Plus, who can spot a proportionally sized Vulture at 500M when it's moving? It would require huge rebalancing to correct the scale, and I'm still only talking about the ships players can control.
But back to your immersion factor - please remember that most of the space stations were built by either commercial mining or military interests - and both groups had powerful motivations to build lasting, autonomous locations. So yeah, they are large. Huge. They should be. It takes a cast of thousands to enable space pilots to hop from station to station and stay alive. When is the last time YOU thanked your mechanic? From my perspective, I have always thought the stations should be much larger than they are currently in-game, with about 10x the npc traffic. It's interesting to talk about, sure, but honestly I'm kind of glad the devs are focusing on other, more pressing areas first.

By god! The asteroid is a serco!
Nah, that's just the latest Prom. They keep getting uglier over time.
First I'm sorry if my post was a bit hard to understand in hind sight I should have waited until a time not 2:00am to post it.
incarnate I'm sorry I used the asteroids to compare the size because your right they come is a lot of different sizes, and after taking a few screen shots of my ship vs. the windows on the station or the docking bay I would have to say my argument of the scale is bunk, I guess my statement stemmed from the relative closeness of things like asteroids to the station for example sitting in the near middle of the station I targeted a asteroid and is was only 647m away from the station that’s nearly six football fields (1 yard = 0.9144 meter) and that feels rather strange unless the station has a kind a power over the asteroids to remove danger of being hit. the planets are to scale I hadn't actually tried to get to one until this morning, I had made the assumption of them being rather near since other things were rather near to each other (I never got to a planet, I turned around and warped to a station).
sarahanne I'm guessing you looked at the root directory on my site since it is a work in progress of a WoW guild, but no I don’t think wow was my main inspiration I think it would have been freelancer. I do like the way the WoW interface is soo easily manipulated by the users, and I do like the small windows used for the menus, but it’s also not the only game that has done this.
iTripped I not sure I get what you mean "When is the last time YOU thanked your mechanic?" because if your seriously asking me I would have to say rarely because the only time I've used a mechanic was when it was a job I didn’t want to do like rebuilding the engine or my transmission, but if you are trying to say I was being ungrateful for what I do have in the game and how hard this team has worked on this game, I'm not ungrateful like I said I wanted to make my own game but I don’t have the skill to write my own engine from scratch these guys have a level of skill that is beyond me at this time.
I've also concluded that the space stations are not all that large unless my way of ranging them is off, I would love to see larger stations and if nothing else a Larger docking bay and more of them at different angles (if you has watched BSG you might have noticed the Pegasus has two landing strips one on either side of the other, since in 0G up and down have not relevance why not able people to land in different fashions/faster.)

The layout of the panes seems kinda haphazard and disorganized to me in your layout, Godfrey.
What about having the panes open up/out like drawers? If you want a fullscreen you can close (minimize) all the panes. That would be interesting.
But I'm all for a sense of scale in Vendetta. I think the stations, asteroids, and Capships are all too SMALL, I want to feel dwarfed when I enter into a docking bay.

Wow, didn't someone tell you about the planets?
I'm not a'tellin'..
go try and reach em' again, just do it for a day or two :P

zamzx zik no, no one had told me but after about ten min I started to guess that I would never get to it, I just as wary of jumping to more conclusions.
LeberMac I agree with you desire to feel dwarfed I would like to feel like a ant walking into a persons house.
Drawers for the UI would be neat I would just like the ability to hide things and to bring up things like the star map or the inventory without something blocking my main screen.
