Automated Factories or ......
1001 and one things to do with Ore

Just an idea i had, i've broken it down into 4 stages, 3 of which require other things to be available to players before they could be done, it's a bit long winded but here goes.
Factories -- Stage 1
So we mine a load of ore, well what happens to it? My guess is that it gets ferried to an automated factory and turned into stuff. So lets populate the sky with different factories from different factions. Something new to look at.
Also an opportunity to have different(ish) mission types. i.e. Get x number of components and take to factory Y in sector Z-zz etc etc
Stage 2 ---- Capitol ships
Why don't they just plonk the automated factory in the asteroid belt? Cause there large and VERY expensive and a well positioned factory can cover a large area of space. Saying that how do you make factories cost effective? Make most of it out of an asteroid itself.
2 opportunies for different missions, one get and aseroid and move to z-zz (this would be very difficult and time consuming but would pay well) go and destroy factory x belonging to faction y. Both missions would require a well manned capitol ship as the factories would be well armed and armored and moving a large enough asteroid will need a BIG engine
Oh by the way pirates might want to consider hauling away someones factory and holding's location secret until the owner pays up ... just a thought
stage 3 - Guild bases
How do you build a guild base? Simple get a construction bot feed it full of ore etc and it will eventually make a factory out of an asteroid. Then feed the factory all the stuff it will need to make the base.
Construction bots would be cheap ... keep them alive long enough to make a factory would be very time intensive i assume. As would be keeping the factory alive while it's building the base.
stage 4 --- crafting
what do you do when you've built your base .... use the factory to make stuff and sell for profit ... yaaaah! Program the factory fill it full of ore etc and away you go. Unless your a pirate/smuggler then wander over to someone elses factory, hack into it and get it to make loads of illegeal substances to sell on the blackmarket. (obviously the last part wouldn't be that easy.)

Nice idea. Time consuming process till you get something built but....it sounds ok.
All good ideas Macscarfe, which have all been discussed before, but I won't hold that against you like others might. :)
I know the Search function on the forums is not really what I could call... adequate... but do a search for "crafting" or "guild syations" or "player-owned stations" or "capships". There's a lot of good ideas floating arounbd out there.

Yeah, a truely inspiring first post, albet about every part of that has been suggested, it's nice to see a fresh new post with it all combined.
