back to the headlights idea...

i believe that the multi-vision console would completely blow headlights out of the water, but they SHOULD be a sml port add-on... one less weapon, but i would really love to play VO in IR (smash into millions of cold asteroids though).

oh, and one last thing, if you are travelling at the speed of light, then you turn on your headlights... what happens?

does the light from your headlights automatically travel 2X lightspeed? or, does the light go nowhere? or in a wierd universe, would the light shine backwards?

....enter special relativity, which states that the light from your headlights travels at the same speed when measured by ANY observer; IE, you observe it to travel out in front of you at the speed of light, but anyone observing it reaching them would also measure it to be travelling at 1X the speed of light. This basically occurs because space distorts when things move fast (and indeed, when they accelerate, but that's general relativity) and cause strange effects relative to each observer - hence the name of the theory. ;)

This is how special relativity differs from Newtonian physics. Fun, no? :P

On a more VO-related note, how hard would it be to flip the sector backgrounds over so that they are all facing the right way? As it is currently, if you note the positions of things like stars etc on the background, and make a jump to another sector (after noting that sectors position relative to the first and to the reference objects), you'll find that the background in the new sector will be flipped over (IIRC in every dimension) from how you would expect it to be. :o

I'd have to draw some diagrams to properly figure this out, but I *think* you could solve this by simply flipping the backgrounds of the sectors in the correct direction...

I know this isn't exactly top priority and doesn't need to be looked at any time soon, but could we get a dev comment on the feasibility of fixing this, as I think it would help add a bit more of an immersive feel to the environment by better showing the links between the sectors. :)

That's an old bug, Soulless. Ask RelayeR about that one...

...you mean about how to fix it? Or just about the cause of it?

But yeah I know it's really old. Just presumed it wasn't enough of a priority to bother with yet :P

No, it has something fundamental to do with the way backgrounds are generated and used. Honestly, I don't even remember why they're upside down. Ray would know. But I don't think it's trivial to fix without redoing the math associated with background generation.
