you should be able to hire NPC's for instence if your realy ritch you can get your own escorts or your own pirate teams or start a coleny like so your like a hive queen!

Try the test server if you can.. you can get an escort, I guess that's a start..

Yes, there is a test server.

You can log in on it by typing 'test:username' in the login screen instead of just 'username'. For me it's test:aVirulence ..

I don't know when you joined, but if you joined (very) recently, you can not acces the test server yet.
