naming ships

Mar 21, 2006 nioubi link
I have owned the same Behemoth for nearly 6 monthes without being killed, until yesterday.
What if we could give our ships names, as one does for boats, and as its done for cap ships atm ?
It would be nice to be able to cross a well known ship, such as the Millenium Falcon ^_^

this has been previously sugested, and baisicly everyone agrees that the ability to name your ship would be good. the main debates are whether or not players should be able to modify their ships.

It would be cool to name your ships, I agree. But I'm sure name overlapping would occur and also, ships are constantly being destroyed on a regular basis. Therefore making the naming issue a (semi) moot point.

A more feasable approach would be naming capitol ships, since there would be fewer of them and (hopefully) they wouldn't die as much.

Well, what if ship naming was a part of the "preset" option? If you create a preset ship loadout, then any ship you buy with that preset would also take the name that you assigned to that preset. As well, if you die and opt to have the same ship and loadout, it takes the same name. Of course, ship names could be changed after this point, but the object would be for it to be easier to have consistant names for the same ships, which I think would be the most common desire for these kinds of things anyway.

What's stopping you from naming your ships now?

I've said before that giving a name to every ship lessons the coolness factor of naming. Save it for something important that doesn't explode every 10 minutes, like capships.

>Save it for something important that doesn't explode every 10 minutes,

or you could play as though your cheracter isn't suacidal and do your best to not explode every 10 minuts.

anyway, naming a ships shouldn't be automatic. it should be something (like making a binde) that while not difficult has to be activly done by the player. that way those who don't want their ships named don't have to, but those who do can.

Wow, I agree with A-Dawg once again! What is this world coming to?

yeah, naming makes sense for cap ships, but not fighters, unless through some special circumstance or mission. Perhaps if a specific ship survives for a certain number of hours flight time you get the chance to name it?

Wow! And I agree with Phaserlight! What is this world coming to? Also, in military and civillian(?) flight, airplanes are not identified through their names, but through their callsigns, eliminating the need to remember many different names for one craft.

For example, on a modern aircraft carrier, it is identified with a name because its large and has a much smaller chance of being destroyed. It's 100 or so planes it carries are identified through the pilots callsigns, much like how our names work in VO.

well, as i said, I kept my moth for a few monthes before beeing killed in it, thats when I thought I should have given it a name to remember ^_^;

I'm tempted by Phaserlight's suggestion of being able to name a ship after it survives a certain number of flight hours.

In any case - A-Dawg: Sea vessels, on the other hand, are usually named no matter how small they are. It's kind of up for debate as to whether we follow the traditions of one or the other. Star Trek, for example, uses Navy ranks (kind of), and names even the smallest runabout or shuttle.

I allready name my ships.
My main trade moth is called "TGFT Popper" and my primary escort ship is called "TGFT Splashdamage".
I also have a hornet (220ms infiniboost) with no weapons in it, it's called the "TGFT SuperHornet". (I use it to move fast in the galaxy)

Just becuase it dosn't say so when you target it dosn't make it not have a name.
Sure, it would be nice if the game kept the names for me, but I'm sure I can make something like that when/if the devs open up for some custom and legitimate Lua stuff. Each ship DOES have a unique ID in the game universe, yaknow!

Well, one can also tweak their hails a bit to simulate this, but yeah, it would be nice to name our ships (or at least presets, as previously suggested).
