you should be able to get drunk and then go flying. your ship would respond all @#@#4 up and slow. the color pallette would go all weird too, like in ultima underworld.
you would also lose skill points, because drugs destroy brain cells.

Like in Call of Cathulu when you lose sanity? Then the colors on the screen change and the controller loses responsiveness.

It probably wouldn't be suitable for a "E"-rated game to promote use of drugs by making them entertaining online.
Besides, if drugs we available in VO, we'd all be sercos...

VO: my anti-drug.
VO : my drug
I take exception to that.
Just because unenhanced organisms cannot bypass the side-effects produced by drugs, unlike ours can, you decide to slander our achievements. That is neither diplomatically nor scientifically and definitely not politically correct. I would be grateful if you would withdraw your statement, sir.

Hrm. I love this idea. (Of course I would)

It's not like it would make drugs out the be good things, if anything it illustrates how drugs effect you in a "negative" way. Sure at first the might be a positive thing for battle like taking a stimulant for better responce time in the cockpit, but when they wear off and you no longer have any more there should be a negative effect on your responce, twice as long as the positive. Also, prolonged use would make your "uptime" shorter and shorter and your "downtime" longer and longer till you become addicted and have to spend all your time trading to get your combat drugs that you need. Only by waiting out the down time would you be able to get full benefits from using it. There should be no loss of any licenses though, that would just be wrong.
I see nothing wrong with this idea other then it's yet ANOTHER thing the devs need to implement. Get it in the queue* now before it gets any bigger!!
*thx Shape ;)

heh
Well, having watched BSG recently, I think that involving stims, with short-term positive/long-term negative effects might be a good idea.
Starcraft had stims, and they appear even in our military today.
Why not?

you shoud lose your license. license is based on skill and your skill goes down if you drink too much.
if you dont believe me, go watch a documentary about the lead singer of the Pogues, shane mcgowan. i think its called 'if i should fall from grace'.

What about a "bad fuel" random event (or maybe something tied to a mission), where your engines go all wonky?
That would be funny, if you are "pulled over" by the station guard after spending too much time in the bar, you can lose license levels.
What about exceeding the station speed limits? Making illegal left turns? We should make some faction (like Ineubis or some useless faction) ultra-strct with station traffic.

the license are based on experience points.. experience points are supposed to model, somehow, the improvement of skill over time. drugs destroy brain cells, which hurts skill, so thats the logic behind that.

and as anyone who has read the backstory knows, it already involves drugs

Key word there being "too much", which would be the same as say an alcohalic who NEEDS alcohal to function normally.
What we are talking here would be like 5 points max per usage, so sure why not. But at that level, why not just NOT do it at all. I prefer the downtime effect, which means if you use these hypothetical drugs too much in game then you have to either play with diminished respnce from your ship, which would in effect mimic the loss of skill or not fight at all till you were back to full status, which happen when you sober up from a night of drinking.

What's stopping you from doing that now?

No but perhaps you should be able to sell drugs as contraband ^^
