Faster Server?
I've been thinking along the lines of the lag (which has now been solved, thanks to Andy & Ray) and I'd like to ask a question:
Should Vendetta get a faster/better server or more servers?
Some quotes:
Incarnate: The sheer number of object-add packets per second for several HACs armed with 20-some rapid-fire AGTs each was becoming too much for a lot of clients.. and occasionally even for the server.
If two or three HAC's with their turrets caused the server to slow down, then we're in trouble. Is there a budget for a faster server upcoming? I have... a friend who may be able to find slightly-used server hardware.

I'm fairly confident that it's more of a client issue then a server issue, but perhaps you are right. But the HAC's weren't even streamlined for the production server yet anyway, it's all been testing AFAIK.
Or a bandwidth issue, which is only partially "fixable" by adding more bandwidth at the server end. Is that correct?
Lag issues not fixed.
Its happening again.
Its happening again.
If it's happening again, kindly post details in the appropriate thread in Bugs. There's no mention of continued lag there at the moment.
I have an idea... send me the code, and I'll hang my *own* server... hehe...

What about making the very rapid firing weapons to shoot bursts. That way less packets could be generated? Right?
I can't see any gameplay drawbacks with this.. A packet is instead sent every burst instead of every time bullet exits the gun.
Maybe i'm completely off off but it was just a thought.

Hello.
I have been doing a lot of research since this thread was started on servers and computer science. I have uncovered some interesting facts and approcahes that I think merit the attention of the Vendetta community; in particular the programmers.
In my various visits to several local technical research libraries, university engineering departments, and so forth, I met a professor who told me of an exciting but relatively little known technology available to speed up computer operations. When I inquired further he pointed me to an obscure website containing discussions between high level researchers in the topic. I asked him how I could share this information with my colleagues in the computer community, and he said I should 'paste the URL'.
After a few hours of research I believe I have figured out how to successfully 'paste the URL'. So here it is. This link, I hope, will provide the Vendetta community with some insight as to how to, indeed, speed up the server, and make it run faster at the same time.
Thank you.

anan-'paste the URL'-zi.
