Fix Ship Rotation Speed on Mouselook

Dec 31, 2005 rhapsody link
Currently, the ship rotation speed with mouselook on is different from the actual ship rotation speed...for instance, changing rotation with mouselook on is instantaneous, whereas the actual ship slows, stops, and accelerates its rotation in the other direction. This leads to problems with your orientation not matching the ships orientation, and no way to know it without analyzing the angle of your shots, which is a tremendous waste if you've got non-energy weapons on the ships. I'd like to see the rotation on mouselook match the rotation off of mouselook, I don't see any reason why these should be different, especially when mouselook on results in a perceived orientation different from your actual orientation.

Failing that, at least put a tick on the HUD indicating what direction "straight up" is for your ship's current orientation. But I'd much rather have the roll speeds on and off mouselook match.

Ah, but then what will keyboard and joystick players do, without their built-in rotation speed advantage? Or what about people using the controllable rotation speed aliases? A level playing field! What a crazy idea!

umm....

mouselook just gives the ship a point that you move toward, the ship still goes through the same motions. It IS a level playing field no?

It would be, except there's no way to tell the actual orientation of your ship with respect to your POV in terms of rotation. Numerous times I find myself, particularly in heavy ships, expecting to strafe in one direction coming out of a roll, and strafing in quite another since the ship itself has yet to stop rolling. A tic somewhere giving the orientation of "up" would be preferable to this "your ship could be at any angle at any time."

How about a "Center Viewpoint" button? Wait... with a slight delay... turbo can be used for that...

or you could just turn mouselook off?

Perhaps I wasn't clear enough. The roll speed in keyboard mode is faster than the roll speed in mouselook mode (not sure about mouselock mode). Equalizing them would probably help.

depends on the ship, actually. The roll speed for mouselook is fixed no matter what at a set speed. The moth, for instance, rolls much much slower than this speed, whereas the centurion and some other ships roll faster.
