Escort mission suggestions
••Once the escort mission is accepted, it would be nice if you were added into a convoy group - so you could see the health of the convoy members, as well as being able to communicate to other group members (and perhaps even the NPCs - which leads me to my next suggestion).
••Add in the ability to issue orders/suggestions to the NPC convoy - i.e. requesting the convoy to come to a halt, to scatter, go to a specific sector temporarily, and to resume the course. Seems like it wouldn't be too terribly difficult to program in, but then again, I don't have much experience in programming.
••Occasional NPC pirate attackers. Nothing big, perhaps just one or two pirates per journey (this would, of course, increase if the convoy was larger with more defenders).
••Perhaps, as something that would add a bit more 'atmosphere:' occasionally, the convoy would inform you that they have decided on a different destination (because they found a better deal, or the original destination turned out to be too dangerous), and would change course mid-mission. Due to this change, perhaps they could sometimes give you a compensatory bonus as an apology.
--Along those same lines, on extremely long trading runs, the convoy would drop in on a station for a few minutes for a break to repair/rearm, and then continue on the course.
••Convoy ships would alert you of nearby potentially hostile vessels and/or message you (in group chat) if they are under attack.

Piracy Mission Suggestions:
••Depending on the nature of the mission (size of convoy/number of crates for 'procurement' etc.) NPCs would be sent to assist you, and you would be put in a group with them.
--You could even set up a system where if you were less respected or less experienced in pirating, YOU would be the one following 'orders' from the pirate NPCs (who to attack, where to warp, etc.), and as you became more respected (with the faction system, license system, or something else entirely), you would be in command of the pirate NPCs. Although, something like this would probably be extremely complex to create.
--But you usually wouldn't see other NPC pirates on your usual run-of-the-mill convoy pirating missions. And even if you did, it would only be 1 to 3 of them.
••NPC traders would occasionally drop their cargo if they became heavily damaged, or perhaps even if you hailed them.
••NPC traders would sometimes broadcast a sector distress signal if they were defenseless.
