imho, make them degrade to the basevalue. I have been on the second page for ages and nothing is going to get me away from it if i would not duel.
They should go back down/up to base 1000 value just so that this actual ranking has a dynamical feeling and it has some use (maybe per week go up / down with a max of 200-300). So if you are 2400 today you'll only be 2100 next week. Xhile if you are -11 today you'll be +389 next week. Or make it some other formula (that goes down faster the higher the deviance is from 1000 you are)
cheers

I would say they should degrade a bit slower than that. Enough that a person doesn't have to fight 30 duels a week just to keep their standing.
I'd say a degradation of about 50 a week sounds reasonable though.

What about upgrading? If I don't duel will my last-page duel ranking go back up to near 1000-ish?
yes leber. At least for my proposition.
God, yeah your maybe right that 300 was pushing it a bit, but 50 is a tad low though, it should at least be 100.
50 points can easilly be 1 - 2 duels.

Heh. I can duel and gain 200 points at my low levels.
Or.... we could just do away with the ranking system and dueling could be used as a bet system. You could ask to duel a person, then make a wager on it, and the person can chose to accept, decline or counter offer. I think this would be much more functional than a ranking anyways, as it can be easily borked... The betting system I believe would be a lot better and more interesting.
Rather not, i like rankings make me feel all fuzzy and so on. I wouldn' tmind seeing a betting option available, i just know i'll never use it. The little scrooge in me denounces it even and considers it a waste of perfectly fine money.
so let me get this straight?
you wanna make people who dont play anymore lose all recognition n stuff? thats not very fair. think about poor uncledave, mists, eldrad, apex azimuth, moriel gilman, space hunter, karr soulblade, mortigan, destoras ano, marron tol, phaserdark, kepler, malcomx, troherg, amarus, ?, sputnik mk2, viciousnanite, serpentine, zet, sputnik, cro-bo yoman, who would all lose their top spots if this was implemented. how would they feel if upon returning they were just average again? well???? they would be pissed.
what about the people who dream of pwning uncledave's duel score, huh? what about them?? souldnt the best of the best always be on display so we can atleast oggle at how pwnish they are????

I disagree who?me? (but i hope your post wasn't meant to be sarcastic or i'll start feeling like a jackass)
Point being, seeing as this game is supposed to revolve around skill, and we all know and agree that practice makes skill and lack of practice harms skill you could conclude that the people that were considered to be most skilled 1 month ago aren't nearly as skilled as they used to be therefore not worth their precious spot. However if they keep playing and winning they will quickly regain their notority and therefore also their spot.
PS: who me i know you dislike it because you'll lose your precious -13 rating then :D

I'd like this, active players should control the top spots. But I'm inclined to put it at 3/day. I think it should be fairly insignificant.
A record of the pilot's highest/lowest ranking could be kept, so they have proof of their past (in)famous days.
>.<
Funnily enough, I don't like the idea.
I worked damn hard for that ranking. I don't think you realize hard it would be to maintain 2400. If you lose a duel at 2400 you don't lose just 50 points. It's more likely to be around 150 - 300. If I win against a person with 1000 I'd get about 3-4 points iirc.
Also, until the lag problems get sorted out, I really really don't like this idea.

Martin I was kinda not surprised :D
anyway as moofed stated : A record of the pilot's highest/lowest ranking could be kept, so they have proof of their past (in)famous day.
I know martin but that is now exactly the challenge, it will become even more noteworthy to get a 2400 with that decline. Still i could easilly spoof the system if I wanted to. It just needs 1 dedicated person and a couple of friends that want to take the dive for him with just a newly created char.

actually, i've mentioned that resetting the duel rankings would be a good idea before...
Martin seems to suffer from a Bobby Fisher syndrom :o)
I'd say about 1% or 2% a week.
Also display the maximum ever achieved, and maybe the highest 10-duel running avarage. You take the running avarage over 10 duels, and store the highest value of that.

This idea might be just a tad too forward, but when the Devs start advertising the game, I'd actually like for the duel score to be reset completely. If we get an large influx of new players, it would be nice if they could start competing with us on an equal footing, and it would also be durned fun for the rest of us to work our way up (or, as in my case, down) again. Gives some more incentive to PvP.
But at the same time, I know all of you worked hard for that score (especially who? me?, with your astonishing and impressive 20 ), and it would be completely unfair to just erase it. Perhaps a Hall of Fame, with last time around's duel rankings?

it should be like a ladder system, where you have to participate atleast once a day or once a week or something to maintain your rankings
if they degrade, they should degrade VERY slowly... for some people, having them degrade 50pts, or 5% a week would be no problem - people who duel all the time.
for others, like me, who duel MAYBE once a week, and even less than that if you only count those duelists with a duel rating above the default, it would hurt our ratings quickly.
Ion:
I really don't see how that would be a big issue... the duel ratings would shift around quickly if low-rating noobs started winning against high-rating vets, which is the beauty of the whole system... you fight someone with a high rating and win, their rating goes down a lot and becomes part of your rating.

It's FisCher damn it.
Besides, old bobby only peaked at 2780. Kasparov maintained a higher ratings in the 2800s for a long time.
BUT....
You noticed the rating *inflation*?
The problem is this : new players get 1000. But, the median rating "effective" rating of duelers is less than 1000. So, people who are effectively >1000 will keep getting higher and higher rating given the same amount of "skill".
In Chess, there is a mechanism to prevent this. You only get a rating if you participate in a "ELO-rated" [edit for clarity] tourney and *then* obtain a "performance" rating of 2205 or above (it might have changed by now, but i am out of the chess scene too long).
In VO, you don't have tourneys. But you can implement something like Chess :
You make each "new" player duel a rated player 3-5 times before getting a rating which would be according to their "performance". The rated player do not suffer/gain any rating points from these "evaluation" duels. This way, a new player will get a beginning rating more true to their actual skill, rather than artificially (high) rating of 1000.
[EDIT : I know that the average 1000 is calculated based on an initial set of duels, or at least 1000 is set to be the average. The problem is that average player skill fluctuates (mostly degrades). The reason is that the initial pool is based on set of players who are skewed to be more skillful, since many of them are beta/alphas. Not to mention the existence a great number of temporary trialists, and "rating stuffer exploit temp chars ala ViciousNanite" will push the actual average rating much lower than 1000.]
