Ion,
2 points i'd like to make here,
first of all my explenation of learning your ships limits is depended on some level of variation in ship quality. as such no level of player practice can compensate unless the ship itself inpruves. ie, if a valk is a valk is a valk, i can never become better with my valk than i am with your valk. so the best way to introduse that posibility is to allow ships to inpruve slightly as they are used.

secodly, all RPGs walk a fine line between what you can do and what your character can do. as i see it this is simply another device to encourage better role-playing by allowing a degree of seperation between your and your character's skills. you still have to posess the skills to get your character that bonus, and keep it, but once you do your character gais a level of seperation from you that i think at least helps to encourage you to treat your character as something other trhan an extencion of your ego (here i mean ego is in sence of self not as in arrogance).

anyway from a realisam point i am unconvinced by either of my 2 arguments alone, which is why i presented both the cheap mod version and the learning the ship's limits version. i think that those two together make a fair case for how ships could get better over time.

He has a point.. as it stands now, VO is a still little more than spacequake with a few rpg elements tossed in.. if the devs truly wish it to become an RPG then more rpg-ish things (like improvements based on more than just your hand-eye coordination) need to be added.. otherwise it'll never be more than a fancy space shooter.
