Naming your ship

I'm with Lord Q on this as well. I don't think that you should necessarily have to name your single person fighter either. But the ships in the game are not all fighters. Some are traders that have traditionally been named. Give the player the option, I guess is all I'm saying...

I suppose next you'll want name the AGT's b/c swords were named in LotR, after all. Let's even go further and name the Xith bullets in our Rail Guns.

My point is that there's a limit. WW2 pilots and sailors usually have only 1 fighter/ship in their lifetime, very few had more than 5. Most of us have gone through hundreds of ships.

Some time back I made a suggestion about naming ships & having ships become more individual over time. I think it addresses fooz's objection, as it would only be the ships that a pilot had for long enough to become unique that would be named. http://www.vendetta-online.com/x/msgboard/3/10893

If your argument is that you lose a hundred ships in a month so there is no point in you personally naming your ships, then don't name your ship. Or just use the same name all the time for the ship you fly. It really should be up to each captain to determine if they want to name their ship.

As for spoofing names, the idea was that if the name of the ship is equivalent to the ship registry, then you could get a fake id that would let your ship pass through space where you are a criminal. The id would only be good if you don't attack anyone and would fail completely if you flew within 1000 m of a station where your faction was below say -500 or whatever it is that is so low that they send strike forces after you.

Obviously, only the pirates/black market would sell the fake transponders. Even in this case, you wouldn't have to choose a name for your ship. You could also toggle it off and on, but once it has failed, it can not be used again.

fooz said: When you name a ship, you're becoming attached to it. And these fighters you're attached are expected to blow up every few minutes... that's not a feeling of attachment.

LOL fooz, that's supposed to be MY line. Blowing up every few minutes. Boy, I have to teach you some skillz!

Well, when crafting comes of age, I'd very much like to be able to name my weapons AND my ships, heck, even my mineral scanner if I want to. Like this:

LeberMac's Orion Rev C "The Unrelenting" is equipped with Dual Neut 3's "Fury" and "Terror", with the "HoverBoy Mk. IV" pilot's seat. Ship sponsored by Jose Cuervo Imports, Orion Heavy Manufacturing, and your friendly local Auto-Doc franchise.

Since, when crafting gets implemented, every widget will HAVE to be unique with a new ID, because there will be so many different things. Might as well add a "Name" field to help you keep things separate. Imaging having to choose between 10 different Neutron Blasters based solely on weapon stats alone... It would be easier to name them something that you can recognize.

i hadn't thought of that LeberMac, but that's a good point. named equipment would be easier to distinguish than custum equipment by stats.

anyway, i have to agree, why not let people name their equipment? it doesn't hurt anything and a lot of people may think it's cool

One more thing on the naming stuff issue.

At what point will all the different names for things affect server performance? if at all? (I'm completely ignorant as far as net-stuffs go... so... yah)

i dodn't se how it wouls affect server perfomance at all that should be prety much client side. and comunicating a name should be comprable to firing a shot (if i uderstand the way thes erver handles that anyway)
