Resistance Level in Space
There is no resistance in space, once you at your top speed you shoulnd loose it so fast like you do. If anything, lose it alot slower. Also Keeping the aimer steady makes alot better dogfioghts, like in Decent : Freespace (one of the best space fighter games ever) Right now its to your advantage to get still and shoot your target, which is wrong.
This has been suggested multiple times (by this I mean about 200 times since I've been here). Early versions of VO had no slowdown, and the result was that you'd end up miles out into space, lost. Combat was impossible, as you'd spend all of your time trying to find opponents, then you'd be by them in milliseconds. The end result is that deceleration was implemented as a gameplay conceit rather than a realism conceit.
Also, I suggest that you pick a fight with someone in Sedina, stand still and shoot, and see what happens, or did you mean something else?
The center represents where you want the ship to turn, whereas the outer rings represent where it's actually pointing. You don't turn instantly.

but still, its hard to have dogfights like that(with the aiming system), am i wrong? i tried to have dogfights but they ended up more like spinning around in an area of about 5 meters going very slow trying to hit my oponet. now i just stand still and shoot. i dont think speed even matters in dogfights currently. And dont get me wrong, this game is pretty awsome, i cant wait to get into PVP =)
Yeah, I admit it's got a bit of a learning curve. I think your frustration stems from having Flight Assist on. When it's on, your ship will fire the thrusters and always try to go in the direction you're pointing. When you turn it off, you can be pointing in one direction and moving in a totally different one. It also frees you up to move backwards. While many players use Flight Assist for day-to-day operations, your average PVPer wouldn't be caught dead with it on.
You can turn that off with the ' key (being the single tic, just to the left of the enter key).
Also, learn your rolls. The roll keys are Q and E. When you're sliding right or left (A & D) or up and down (R & F), hold one of the roll keys to throw your ship into a barrel roll. Rolling (and specifically changing the direction you're rolling regularly) will make it much harder for the bots to hit you.

ahh thanks thats much easier =)
No problems. Other questions?

Not true at all. I use FA all the time. In fact, it's on MOST of the time...well, depending on who I'm fighting. But I'd say 90% of the time it's on.
What it SOUNDS like, is that he has Mouselook on. Mouselook = teh suck. Press ; to switch between the two mouse modes.

I tend to toggle FA on & off a lot, even in PvP. I've got it bount to one of my mouse buttons.
Indeed, there's nothing wrong with FA mode for PvP.
And DON'T learn your rolls, learn combinations of strafes.
Rolls will just send your aim to shit.

Hehe. Maybe your average PVPer won't be caught dead with it on. But your uber PVP-er will be happy to point out that FA mode is as good as any! Though they usually won't be caught dead at all.
