Idea for a "Thank You" for Subscribers (not necessarily long-term)

Okay, I was reading a bunch of posts referring to a possible "thank you" gift for long-time players, and I had an idea.

Why not add a Vulture variant that's got a large port (or something) that's free (or incredibly cheap), but only availible to those who have purchased a subscription? It would add a bit more flavor to the game, and provide a nice little "Thanks for Feeding the Devs" gift/incentive to subscribe.

you can't play longer then 8 hours without subscribing, but if you mean for x amounts of time, yeah, it'd be good, devs are working on it.

I know the "8 hours without subscribing" limit, having encountered it many times in the past, and circumvented it by creating another trial acct because I didn't have the money to subscribe.

This ship is higher-poly than we want most fighters to be (2500 polygons), so I'm kicking around the idea of making it a limited-access variant to keep some cap on utilization. Ie, only people who have subscribed for 6 months or some such.

....

If you read what I said in that thread, you'll understand why I put this in a separate post.

I don't like the idea.

And also, many have already said that a light ship with a large port (*cough*GT*cough*) is too abusable.

I'm with teh fooz on this one.

Whoops, sorry, missed your post in the other thread, Dark Knight. Why is it you prefer a variant of a generally available ship over a new ship? And in Incarnate's quote I posted above he did say that as this was a higher poly model, he wanted it to be somewhat less common.

@fooz & jex:
Are you against rewarding long-term subscriptions in general, or just this specific reward (L port Vult)?
Nov 22, 2005 jexkerome link
Both. Elitism is fine if it comes from "I have better skills than you" as in the bus killer bus or the advanced rails. But elitism just because "I was here B4U" (like those alpha and beta badges) is plain stupid, and shouldn't be rewarded.

And give an L port to a vulture and make it actually flyable, and I can pretty much tell you what everyone will be flying from then on.

Bad reasons, bad prize, bad everything.

Yoda says : L-port light fighter, overpowered and ridiculous it is. The idea, stop pushing you must.

(apologies to him of the borg-kind).

...You people didn't see the "(or something)", did you? The L port was just an idea.

Jex: I'm against the whole elitism thing too. I agree that the alpha and beta testers should be rewarded, but that's about the extent of it. That's why this suggestion was for people who buy a subscription, not just the people who've been around for a looooong time.

yeah, anyway, you can't get very high in levels even if you were doing BP.

im a thinking that alpha and beta peeps should get soem weapon that is hot pink when it fires, or some other color that no weapon is. It might have slightly better stats, but not too much better, and it twould distinguish all their greatly goodness from us lowly postrelease peeps.

Or one of those new raptors with two queenguns (megaposis) hardwired in it sound like a nice bonusship to me.

Ok, where are you getting 'elitism' from? A month or two ago I post a long winded treatsie on what elitism is and isn't.

The devs stated that there would be some reward for those who had been involved with the game longer. This isn't old players whining, "I want something for being here longer!" and saying, "All you new people are beneath me."

It's the devs saying, "Thanks for sticking around."

This. Is. Not. Elitism. Elitism is an alpha saying, "New players are worth less than me." No one says that, or if they do, they're one or two idiot drops in the sea of alphas and betas who just play the game.

If any other game in the world did something like this, they'd probably say it straight out: "This is for people who have given us more money and time." Guild is more circumspect, but there it is. This isn't some snobbery effected by older players. It's a simple market transaction.

I'm tired of being labeled "elitist" because I have an alpha badge. I'm tired of anyone who even TRIES to discuss the dev's stated intentions being jumped on like some Nero singing on the rooftops while Vendetta burns. I'm tired of this sniveling jealousy of something so not worth being jealous over.

On the other hand, I'm tired of everyone suggesting limits on the reward that just oh so happen to include them. Everyone stop saying, "Everyone who signed up after time X (which just happens to be the day before I signed up) should get this!" It's painfully transparent.

In short, everyone freaking grow up.

everyone who signed up before december 10 2004 should get an uber thing that no one else can get!

Damn I signed up on the 23rd. CRAP! 13 days too late!
Story of my life.

I actually rather like the idea of giving alpha and beta testers access to new equipment ealier than the general populace. I am thinking like 2-4 weeks for alphas and 1-2 weeks for betas. The RP reason can be that these characters have better established contacts; the practical reason is that these players are more likely to provide useful bug information AND this kind of reward, although nice, is not unbalancing or even especially unfair. I would note that I am neither an alpha or a beta tester.

Also, if ship symbols/decals ever come out, it would be nice if alphas and betas were the only ones who could use the alpha and beta badges as symbols.

The proposal for the Raptor was specifically to make it available to 6-month subscribers. Ie, anyone who has been subscribed for six months, *or* has prepaid a 6-month subscription (in either case, it would set a flag in the database for that user). The rationale being that it is for more "supportive users" who have stuck around longer, but it also isn't inaccessible to newbies.

I do intend to give some benefit to Alpha/Beta types, but I don't intend to give them anything so fantastic that the rest of the playing population will feel unhappy about it. It is cool to give a thank-you to the old-school supportive players, but it isn't fair to give away anything very.. large, simply based on when a person found out about the game. Thus, my idea for the Raptor being based more on "supportive longer-term players", making it potentially accessible to anyone, but an immediate "gift" to that already-supportive subset of the userbase.

Shadowbane, if I recall, makes an entire new character class available after 6 months. Several other MMOs are moving in that direction as well. Rewarding people who stick around longer. Instead of just making it time-based, I figured it would be just as easy to say "those who have been more supportive". At the same time it does cut down on the population that could use the ship, helping me with my too-many-polygons problem.

Anyway, I'm not totally set on this at all, it was just a thought.. but it seemed I should explain it a little further for any who misunderstood.
