well look at the escape pod thing this way:
Easy camera work :D
You can't be killed, you can't be damaged. Effectively makes the escape pod the *optimum* video recording ship.
I think that there should be a ship that looks like the Observer bot, only tinted green instead of blue or red. Indestructable, with the above mentioned stats.
Only requirement is that if you are flying one, the only way to get out is to /explode so there's no using it as a personal transport. (You would be sent back to the station you bought it at when you did use /explode.) You can dock and what-not, though.

Wait, why do you need to make the escape invincible? Ships are already nigh impossible to shoot down while turboing at 220, why not just set them at 250, and some 1,000 hit points or somethin'? If you die? Back to your nation's capital, mwahahaha!
Celkan: I like that *optimum* video recording ship idea. That'd be a cool feature to have regardless of the adding o' escape pods or not. In fact, it goes a lil' something like this!
This part isn't constructive:
Now, before people start trying to point out obvious flaws that will need fixing...
Yes, the escape pod will be invunerable for the first five or so seconds, to allow the pilot to get oriented. It will be immune to lightning mines at this time. It will bounce harmlessly off other ships, or preferrably explode on contact, save for the five second invunerability. Players *will* be able to use this as a method to warp back to their nation capitals. Tough. Procurement/retreival missions will be unavailable at nation capitals to prevent players from using this as a method of fulfilling said missions while abusing the teleporting. The escape pod won't record times for the racing tracks in Sedina. Did I miss anything?

I do like the idea of having an escape pod. It would be a practical explaination to why there's no permadeath. I think you should have two options when you eject your escape pod. First, you can stay in sector and hope for rescue. Otherwise, you can set your navigation to warp to any sector. The pod would be equipped with a single power source and a device similar to the one that allowes warping between sectors, and to get enough power to warp so far it is designed to only be used once, because it consumes itself as it's used.
For normal maneuvering, since it's small it wouldn't take nearly as much energy to move it. So it could be very fast and very maneuverable without turbo. Since it can only warp once, it's not very useful for spying (though a new spy ship is a good idea), but its speeds (normal, because no turbo) could be up to 250. It would be vulnerable after that five seconds Mynt suggested, but so maneuverable that who could hit it?
As for a ship to film battles for, I say there should just be a mini-robot with a camera that is player-controlled. To prevent this from being exploited to spy on enemies, it would be carried aboard ships (every ship would have one). If you want to film a battle, go there, get way out of the way, and launch your camera bot and go to town. This could still be used to spy, which is why I say it shouldn't be invincible. It should be immune to splash damage (because it would get a lot of that filming a battle) but a direct hit should take it out, so buy a few extras (shouldn't weigh much). It would be very small, fast and maneuverable, so hard to hit even if you're trying, though.
