Where should new tracks go?
As a totally different idea:
We need, like, real estate developers. What should be the market price for an empty sector "lot"? Then you guys can build your own tracks... If a sector had a known "owner" or at least "property managers" it would solve a few problems with construction. We could even have zoning laws for lots in occupied space.
As far as constructing your own tracks, I think a few "mission" commands mapping characters to track segments would do the job, such as "racetrack new" - put a start piece in... "racetrack add fftfcfrrtff2ffcff1trtcrtrtffe" - add forward, forward, turn, forward, checkpoint, forward, (do two rotations, which affects all future turns), turn, forward, forward, switch to type 2 (the narrow dark opaque tracks)... you get the idea. Eventually we can put a real interface on this.

Oooh! I really like the idea of building my own real estate by doing missions.
I can't tell if a1k0n is being sarcastic or not...
OK, tie it in with a dynamic economy, player-owned "plots" of space, either purchased or leased (or subleased) from a "landlord" (which could be a nation, guild, or another player)
Then we could just use "building blocks" to build stations, racetracks, combat arenas, whatever.
But methinks you'll need to have the economy and crafting done first. :)

or have contests for who can create the best racetrack...
What about the script that allowed racetracks to be created just by somebody flying about?
Heh, I'm not being sarcastic.
roguelazer, that was with the dumb rotating ceres stations, not the actual "hamster tube" tracks. But I suppose a heuristic search could sort of work there.
I think we need an auction or something, and only have a few sectors up for auction at a time... Which brings me back to my original point: where should race tracks go, ideally? Itan, Dau, Sol II?
We don't really need crafting and dynamic economy and all that jazz in place in order to do the dumb race track idea, but we do for stations. But if we create a real estate market where the only thing you can build are race tracks the system will be kind of ridiculous (I'm picturing every single empty sector in the universe taken up by a huge twisting maze of doom or something) unless we only zone a few sectors for racing, and let the market determine what they're worth..

I've been wondering, would it be possible to disable turbo inside racetracks?
while the dynamic of constantly tapping turbo is interesting, I think a more fluid way of flying would be nicer.
and to keep it fast paced, maybe people's base velocity increases by some percentage in the tubes, say 33%?
so a vulturious would be going 100 m/s at full speed inside the tracks.

How about some race ships specific to racing with high top speeds, NO turbo speed and NO weapons ports.
Shape,
You may not realize but turbo is what racing is all about.
It's all about timing your drifting and forward acceleration.
I would be in favor of specific race tracks that give you ALL turbo or NO turbo.
Anything to keep it interesting :)
Also 100 isn't fast paced at all.
Put it up to 300 and we'll have some fun :)

Well, right now, turbo is what racing is all about. But think of all the things you don't really use. Rolls, strafes, these things aren't included.
But I don't want to take away this kind of racing, I just think that with the full maneuverability of a ship, there's a lot more you could do.
Would be interesting if you had a limited number of turbo boosts. Or if there were specific areas inside tracks where you could turbo.

You don't roll or strafe????
Dude try beating my times WITHOUT rolling or adjusting your course by strafing.
Its like... impossible.
[edit]
That'd be so cool if we had obstacle courses to fly through tho!

Yeah! I want the deathrace racetracks!
Flames shooting out from the walls! Giant Smashy-thingies that you must step through a bit at a time! Whirling Blades of doom! Quicksand! etc, etc.
Would be even MORE fun. Maybe I'd RACE then! Right now, the habitrail gerbil-tunnels are kinda fun, but in a CtC-kinda way. They don't capture my attention the way the Deneb Run does.

Announcer: "And Lebermac comes around the fifth turn... oooh, right in the spike chompers!" ;p
I just barely started, but if people are trying to be the fastest in the universe, they would get bored with tracks that get faster to beat all the time. Perhaps some gigantic race tracks would be nice! Even competitions for money to hve a challenge.

Hi Haln!
Race in the Deneb run this Saturday. It's a long race around the galaxy, basically. Top prize 1 million cr.

Andy- I think the newer players would benefit from race tracks in the starting nation sectors. Learning to race around a track does help you master the flight controls. You do have to use strafe and roll and apply thrust at different times if you don't want to bounce off the walls. This would also allow you to add a beginner mission (combat level < 2) of "complete the track in under X:YZmin and earn some Combat XP& credits" (so they can do something besides botting to get XP during the trial period)
I'd suggest a "standard" track for each starting system that wasn't too complicated. The standard track would be the "mission track". (I think this may give the UIT twice as many tracks- an up side for that nation?) I could build you a model in Rollercoaster Tycoon if you like. A few loops, some light and dark track segments, a few straight aways, a hairpin turn....
[EDIT] ON SECOND THOUGHT IT MAY BE BETTER TO GIVE EACH NATION A DISTINCT MISSION TRACK SO PLAYERS HAVE AN INCENTIVE TO TRY OUT A DIFFERENT NATION.
I would then auction off space for 2 or 3 other tracks. To make it easier to explain to new players I'd consider using the four corner sectors of the system in the starting nation systems for the locations of these tracks. These tracks would be "sport" tracks and would not allow betting.
I would let each gray space system also auction off 2-3 track lots. Gray space would be home to players making thier own courses and running thier own betting parlors. The players here could charge a fee to run the course and set prizes for registered racers.

Yeah, what sarahanne said.
Also... all this talk about player designed race tracks makes me want to point out this old suggestion:
