how to stop Spam-n-Sprint
the problem with swarms, is not the weapon, the guidence, or even the brainless operation - it's those select few who empty a couple tubes on someone, then turn tail to run and rearm. Now, the swarms dissapear shortly after they leave the sector... this is a good start... but it's not enough - not to deter the pilot from using hose tactice to begin with.
What I suggest is a system that forces the swarm user to remain in the sector, unable to jump out, until 10 seconds after the last of their swarms impact or dissapear. The rationale is quite simple: the swarms become tied into the nav system for tracking when fired, and it takes a moment after they finish their flight for the nav system to be diverted back to other tasks, such as jumping out.
This would put some thought into using swarms for engagements, and stop some of the most annoying tactics in the game.

I suggest we just take the rags turbo thrust OR top turbo speed down a notch.
I suggest we remove infiniboost as a whole.
180 OR 190 for infiniboost. None of this infini at 220 BS.
DON"T TOUCH MAH MSC AGAIN!
Hey man... I been saying that infiniboost should be limited to 180m/s for a loooong time...
euhm, I'd have to strongly disagree with the initial suggestion... having a weapon you fired force you to stay in the sector, that would be insufferably annoying and it just goes against the whole master/slave protocol normally found in modern weapons. I think the fact that they disappear once you leave the sector is enough.
To discourage running I'd rather see something like this:

or this:
http://www.vendetta-online.com/x/msgboard/3/11369
...and as for decreasing infiniboost maximum speeds, I'm all for it. The rag is a bomber not a trader however, so rather than nerfing it's top speed I'd rather bump up its turbo energy usage to 55/s

I agree , take out infiniboost. Also make it so you have to have your target in your reticle for so many seconds before you can fire them . Add a countermeasure for them , it would help large ships and be another item we could use on our ships.
[footprint of approval]
Yeah, well using swarms WELL takes skill. Anyone can fire & forget (and usually miss, succeeding only in being annoying) and leave the sector.
Taking out infiniboost on larger ships would help, but it would also change other ship-vs-ship dynamics.
Someone suggested this before (I think Phaserlight, but I could be wrong) - Instead of making the swarms fire-and-forget with internal guidance, make them guided only as long as you have the target "painted" - the swarm user must keep the target in a targeting "cone", otherwise the swarms become unguided missiles.

death to infiniboost!
New spammer toy is Orion hornet with 4 gems, dont forget that too.
New? I've been using it for months!
I always die, though. Mainly because I don't run, but it does serve to point that simply firing missiles is not enough; you have to do it well or all they do is annoy.
Of course, I live to annoy, but my feeble brain is still coming to grips with the running part of spam-and-sprint.
Still, taking Infiniboost from the Rag would be a good idea; it's supposed to be a bomber, not a Moth :P. It would also reinforce its need for escorts, which you warriors seem to love, for when we eventually are a big enough community to stage massive battles.

Naah Jex I have never seen any of teh annoying gem spammers to stay and fight, they just turbo around in circles in hope to score a kill.
It must be great fun thou, turboing in sector firing gems, reloading, coming again and again and again.
What a way to spend an hour or so in this game. Its amazing.
Maybe devs should make one sector like "Space invaders" arcade game just for ppl like that.

GP... I really only wanted it taken care of as a limiter in the annoyance factor, as it really -IS- annoying. nI don't like being unable to KILL someone after they come in to a sector over and over again to fire pesky swarms of spam at me... because I REALLYU WANT TO KILL them for doing it... and the fact that they juyst keep running seems... gay. to me.
Phaserlight:
the point of this thread was to look for ways that would ONLY affect the people who ABUSED the ability to jump out... limiting the ability of others to do it when they need is not what I'm looking for here.
Everyone else:
This thread is not even remotely about infiniboost, ship speed nor discussion on your favorite spam device. take it somewhere else, please.
everybody go home.

This is not a game mechanisim that is broken or needs fixing, it's simply a play style that is annoying, and does not need to be fixed, it's the pilots that need to learn to fight or stop harassing players.
You could also try simply ignoring the spammers, and every once and a while dodge a few missles.
The ability to spam & sprint is a well grounded tactic for attacking the Hive, and any attempt to fix it for PVP is simply going to fix that for Hive attacks as well.
