Weapon subsystem
I suggest that the weapon slots system is re-worked in the following manner:
A ship has a weapons subsystems slot.
The slot is a "type", that is "Type A", "Type B" etc.
An example:
Type A weapons subystem
1 large and 1 small weapon slot
Fits in: medium-sized 1-man ships and above
Type B weapons subsystem
2 large slots
Fits in: large-sized 1-man ships and above
Type C weapons subsystem
2 small weapon slots
Fits in: small fighters.
My moth could carry a type A or a Type B, but not a type C
Some guns would only fit in a Type B and C, some would only fit in a Type A etc.
This will let us customize the ships a little more, but still make it relatively easy to keep things balanced.
...yes, the hidden agenda here is a mineral scanner on my moth...

Personally, I'd rather, if the weapons systems were to be redone, see them be just standard slots and you could choose any configuration you wanted. Make it that a large weapon takes up double the light weapon, so a:
Behemoth gets 4 weapon slots, which could hold 4 small, or 2 large, or 2 small and 1 large
Centurion gets 2 weapon slots, which could have 2 small, or 1 large ( hight end cent {revC/IBG} )
Hornet get 4 weapon slots, which could hold 4 small, or 2 large, or 2 small and 1 large, etc.
IMO, this would allow for much more ship diversity, and I don't think it would cause too much imbalance, but would definitely take some getting used to, and no one in VO seems to like change to much. An example of a big change would be seeing a cent with an AGT, which IMO is not that much of an imbalance only because they have such low armor that they are still vulnerable.

The slot-conversion thing has been suggested before, but here's the one problem I see right off the bat: some ships depend on their particular allotment of S and L ports to fill their niche. It actually makes each ship more unique.
Par example, A 1L 1S Valkyrie would beat a 1L 1S Warthog every time. Right now the one ace in the hole the Warthog has is the ability to carry swarms.

that just shows the weekness in design of the ships as they are now, it's not the weapons fault. I still say more variety in configuration would make ships that much better, sure it takes a while to get used to but it could also creat NEW ship classes that have yet to be thought of.
waitaminute. The design of the ships is weak right now? I think customization could use a few more widgets, but I dunno about this suggestion. I would much rather see different fighters be able to perform in more specific roles, so you have to be prepared for what you're going to be facing.
In addition, I think that it would be more "realistic" if ships didn't have Small & Large ports, but rather Small Weapons, Large Weapons, Small Missile/rocket, and Large Rocket/missile ports. I'll post more on all this in another topic soon.

Sorry for being a little off topic, but according to "johnhawl218":
Goddamn. Imagine a stream of flares counting 112 in number coming from a rag.
I would have to agree with phaser. Also, i disagree with Harry because of some other post about ship roles. The whole VO universe when completed will NOT be filled only with the current ships we have.

sounds about right Fnugget, that's why it's a bomber (Rag). Right now payloads are too small, considering the size of our ships. Ever put a cent up against a window section of a station? You should be able to put a house inside the cockpit of a cent, it's rediculous. In any case. I still think being able to downsize your weapons to accomidate 2 small in one large is not too far fetched and/or sacrafice a large for 2 small.
Perhaps the Stations are the ones which are too small... ¬_¬ Our ships aren't all that big. I think the Cent is something like 11m long.
http://www.vo-wiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Centurion <-- Says 10m long.
Longest player ship is the Behemoth at 38m.
The Heavy Assault Cruisers (Nemesis, Protaris, Sola, Zelor, etc.) are approx. 720m long according to the original release data given during alpha. For an idea of scale, put 60 Valkyries in a line from the front to back of the top perspective in this old art picture: http://images.vendetta-online.com/extras/capital.jpg
Hive Queens are about 120m long and 35m wide. (±5m on width)

those are all made up numbers, I could say the cent is 100m long and that could be true. How does one messure a virtual ship? I agree that the stations are too small, only in that the scale of the ships are too large, by scaling back the ships a bit, the stations would get larger. And in an old post I thought I read that the stations were already maxed out in size for the sectors to handle (Devs?) so shrinking the ships seems a better way to create the illusion of larger ships. Not that it would have any impact on game play at all, since your still looking out the cockpit of your ship, which when you scale down the ships the cockpit camera view would get shrunk at the same time. But it is off topic to Weapon Subsystems.
