I think the fans themselves are willing to supply custom-designed (and therfore generally better and inspired) ships, for simply being able to say that their ship made it into the game. :P

man, that guy is really overcharging for those ships...
i dont realy like those 12$ ships.
Those ships look fairly nice to me, maybe even worth the $12.95, if it's just a one-time fee (which it looks like it is). But IMO it would be cooler to use models created by the fanbase.
I believe the devs already have plenty of unused game art which Waylon left behind before he left. I think that was mentioned in recenty the news post. So the problem isn't so much whether they have it or not, but rather whether they have the time to implement it, since they've got higher priorities right now.
Those ships are unique, at least, but I think we can do better.
I'd disagree with Seraph (about the uniqueness). In fact, I think that those ships are quite nondescript and uninspired. Overall, they look like the work of an amateur who got their hands on Wings3D and Blender. While I share people's desire for new ships, I hardly think Guild needs to purchase other people's models, since they have already demonstrated their ability to create far better models than those on that site. While there is lots of room for improvement in VO, I for one am willing to trust the devs to do a good job.
The devs already have models for ships. The art is not the limiting factor, the ability to implement the art is.
^ What Lemming said.
Oh noes! Does this mean our spacecraft design thingy has been in vain??
How limited is the games capabilities for loading ships? I remember there was a max polygon count in the design contest, but how limiting is this for really complex models?
Granted, not all cool models have to be complex, as it doesn't take long for the Maud to load (apparently), but can Guild SW's machinery handle a model on the scale of, say, EVE?
(At least, they look super-complex)

for that ship contest, Waylon had suggested 2500 triangles for a fighter model. My assault fighter was a bit over 1800.
Course then again, I'm making a new version of the craft with more detail and better looking guns and engines, and I think it'll probably end up over 100k triangles and quads...

Oh, I tought this thread was about ship types we'd like to see. I'm still waiting for my mining Vulture.
As for models, the Devs have yet to use all of the stuff Waylon gave them before leaving, so I think it'll be a while before they need any more.

/me agrees with jexkerome
I never saw that thread as anything else than to throw around brain farts. :P
It nowhere in the intro post says that the ship(s) are supposed to be integrated into the game.
