Ion Storms inTraining mission.

May 18, 2005 pirate_n00b link
I just had the pleasure of landing in an Ion Storm. As a 0/0/0/0/0. Now it was no problem for me as they were Artemis's and Dentek's and Orun's,Cause im good at killing them . But for a new player it would be frustrating. So i ask, Wouldnt it be a good idea that if your lower then level 1 in ANYthing having to do with combat that you nix Ion Storms for that player?

That really doesn't make sense. 3 Reasons:

1) Traders could create something like my Vault character with 0/0/0/8/4+ levels to trade in safety
2) It doesn't make logical sense- why would the weather vanish just because you're inexperienced?
3) This problem would be better solved by a more extensive training mission BEFORE leaving one's homesector

"1) Traders could create something like my Vault character with 0/0/0/8/4+ levels to trade in safety" And risk being killed by uber weapons? nobody in there fucked up mind would do that.

"2) It doesn't make logical sense- why would the weather vanish just because you're inexperienced?" ITS A GAME!!!!

"3) This problem would be better solved by a more extensive training mission BEFORE leaving one's homesector." Now THAT i agree with. I was told by a couple of Veterans to post about this. Cause i brought it to there attention.

In response to pirate_n00b

1) Sure they would, and just trade in nation space.

2) It's also a persistant universe, and having a sector appear one way for one player and another way for another is troublesome to say the least.

3) I totally, utterly agree.

@pirate_n00b

1) I'm going to choose to ignore the fact that you think I'm insane, and just disregard your reply to this point as irrelevant

2) What ctish said

Sorry. I thought you meant YOU had ATLEAST lvl 1 in light weapons and combat.

But yeah. I think ALL training should be done insystem and the player has to PROVE themselves worthy by destroying a Orun.

The tutorial does need to cover how to jump between sectors, so we can't just have it all done in a single sector, unless y'all want to answer "How do I get to a different sector" over and over. But, I don't see why the tutorial mission couldn't be limited to the 8 sectors immediatly surrounding a station, discarding any w/ bots and/or storms, so that the player taking the tutorial wouldn't have to worry about them.

Also, I've heard a few times about players taking the tutorial mission & going to what was supposed to be an empty sector, and encountering a Hive Queen. Limiting the sectors to those around the station, and making Hive Queens never enter those sectors, would solve that as well.

One solution would be to stage the tutorial as a simulation, since it is, after all, a tutorial. Do real pilots do all their training with real planes? No. To the extent that VO is a realistic universe, it will have realistic problems as well. Limiting the behavior of Hive Queens just to make the tutorial safer would destroy one of the main points of their very existence. Hive Queens are supposed to appear in unpredictable places, and, with the upcoming introduction of Leviathans, they will probably become increasingly unpredictable in the future.

Real pilots do not start from day one in the cockpit of a real plane. That's very, very dangerous. It should be. Where do you draw the line between the tutorial-universe and the non-tutorial universe? Frankly, I don't think there should be a line.

Rather than making Hive Queens appear only in predictable places (and thereby making them less interesting), I suggest just modeling real pilot training. Use a simulator. That's what real pilot trainees use.

Am I the only one that finds Deku's suggestion to use a simulator of a simulator ironic?

:P

There's nothing "ironic" about a "simulator of a simulator," any more than having mini-games in modern games is "ironic." When you are in VO, it's no longer a simulator.

Final Fantasy VII had a mini-sim of itself in its "Gold Saucer" area. It wasn't ironic, because from the viewpoint of the characters in it, the universe wasn't a sim. It only became a sim if you deliberately applied meta-reasoning. But then you were no longer really role-playing.

I once saw a fascinating Broadway play about an actress pretending to be an actor pretending to be an actress. It was a very successful famous play called "Victor Victoria." Now that's real acting, if you ask me.

My apologies, but it seems that your reasoning is really meta-reasoning.

I'm sorry if you took that the wrong way, but it was a joke.

Anyways, I think that the respective nation governments think that you are competent to handle yourself, as you obviously are able to fly your own ship. However, specific arenas similar to the racecourses dedicated to fighting with nonlethal weaponry might be useful. I really don't think the devs want to create a system where we go into some sort of training mode.

Somewhat tangental, but on the subject of Ion Storms & Training, I still think Ion Storms should occur in Station & WH sectors. That way new players are fairly likely to have their first Ion Storm encounter in relatively "safe" space, rather than having to figure out WTF is going on w/ an ApuTech-5 on their back.

If we had all new characters start at the same station, then only 8 sectors per nation would have to be off limits to Queens for the very first mission. Additionaly, you could put a sector with Orun collectors adjacent to that start sector, and other nearby sectors with only a single type of basic collector.
