doppler indicator
There is already a display of the distance to your target, but it can be difficult to watch it during battle to see if the target is moving towards/away from you. If you could add a doppler effect to that same display it might help. (red = target is moving away, blue = target is moving towards you, white = target is holding distance.)
Where would this indicator be?
Most of the time you can judge the distance by the size of their ship.

Number goes up, the ship is moving away from you.
Number goes down, the ship is moving toward you.
Number stays still, you're not moving in relation to each other (ignoring any possible changes of angle between the two ships).
Works fine for me...

their dots change darkness depending on their distance to you. that's what I use...
I'd have to agree with genka and harvestmouse here, both watching the numbers OR the dots works just fine, have never had a problem telling the targets direction.
I have, and this sounds rather handy to meself if it were implemented as a toggleable function. The colors could be placed right on top of the targeting box and would be nice and visible.
But make it toggleable with the default off so n00bers don't get all confuzzled.

I just look at the size of the ship.
[Edit] Oops, Shape beat me to it :)

on 1600x1200 on a 21 inch monitor the distance indicator is way to far away from the center of the screen. I would prefer to be able to keep my eye on my enemy and still see the distance. On that resolution, adding a small number to the corner of the targeting box would work just fine.
For those poor, unfortunate souls who have 1600x1200, 21" monitors, Guild has created two handy variables, rHUDxscale and rHUDyscale, to allow you to change the size of the distance indicator (along with the rest of the HUD).
Also, if you can't see the corner of your 21" screen, YOU'RE SITTING TOO CLOSE! YOU'RE GOING TO RUIN YOUR EYES! (Ahem, sorry about that. I was channeling my mom for a minute there...)

The size is not the problem, I don't like the location of the thing. I don't like having to look away from my target.
And my eyes have been stable for the last 8 years or so, while the quality of my monitors has only improved. But thanks for the concern :D

I agree this would be a nice feature to have (it's on the HUD of almost every modern fighter and it's known as a Rate Of Closure indicator)
Also, an Angle Of Engagement indicator would be nice, that gave you the angle between your nose and your target's nose.
However, both of these would seem to be pretty low priority at the moment, which is good.

i would like it if the range indicator changed color to represent whether the target was closing, opening, or maintaining distance. I would expect the code would be relatively easy to write. if nothing else this would help if you wanted to try and maintain formation with some other players. as it is the range indicater is adaquit, but a color system would be a logicle next step.
i do however agree that this is at best a low priority
