Defense Turrets
Station Defense Turrets. We had them. We don't anymore. Now that cap ship turrets are controllable, I see an enormous potential. Discuss.

cool and all, but honestly, what's the point befor there's more players?
"yey, we're sitting in a turret, looking out of a station."
thirty minutes later
"hey, a station guard just passed me for the 607th time"
15 more minutes
"waddaya know? IT'S A PLAYER!!! incoming trader! fire! Look, I hurt him! O dang, he just docked."
"He's out again. And he just went out of my cone of fire."
65 minutes later,
"ANOTHER TRADER!"
etc etc etc...

Maybe if only found on certain stations in the Gray Areas?
A guide could spawn bots to attack the station to keep you entertained. Incomming Hive Queen!

Or there could be an attack triggered by a mission.
oooo ooooo a group "man the turrets" mission. Must defend the station from X waves of Y bots.
"Due to an accident in the docking bay caused by a rogue hive collector crashing into the pressure doors of the barracks hanger we are temporarily unable to launch our ships, trapping our strike forces and defense ships in the station. Due to the repair efforts our ability to launch and recover all ships has been significantly reduced as well. To make matters worse we've detected a large force of (insert appropriate hive bot here) entering the sector, and request your assistance in taking them out. The backup defense turrets have been activated for your use to help you in driving away these raiders."
this would not be a player activated mission, only triggerable by the guides/devs and/or automatically at a random interval.
During this mission the strikeforces would be unable to launch from the station, tho player ships could launch after a small delay (15 seconds maybe) to avoid trapping people in the station. a turrets menu would become availible and quite a few waves of bots would enter the sector at random intervals over the next 15 minutes or so.

This would require the NFZ aound the stations to be disabled hence the suggestion it be placed in a Gray system Station. (maybe ones other than Odia and Sedina?)
Pelatus looks like a good system to test this with its one lonely station.
or the Sedina H-5, for a test
OOH, you could add AI turrets that fire at the racers. Maybe some player controllable ones too.
Station Defense Systems would be a great thing to add. Person thinks that they would sit there and not do anything but what if, per my suggestions ( http://www.vendetta-online.com/x/msgboard/3/10103 ), and I'm sure others have to, that you have random events where Hive Queens or waves of bots descend on station zones, for newbs who don't have much money they can fly there ship and if they run out they can man a turret. It may just be a hoot to sit and man a turret in Grey Space and take out pilots coming in to heal that have questionable faction status to begin with. But I think this is a great idea and if they had them before, like the frigate, I don't see why they can't be brought in for us to beta test them again for them until the work perfectly. After all, we're still in beta right? :wink:

I'm all in favor of adding station defense turrets. However, I'd be much more excited to see a number of operable Goliath cannons make their appearance in Itani space.

Said goliath cannons would have to track very.... slowly.... though, so as to only be a threat to cap ships.
Hey, hey! Then we could have a serco "Wild Weasel" mission to disable the Goliath cannons to pave the way for a cap ship assault!
