Cool article on VO at MMOBro

I stumbled across a well written article on Vendetta Online at a (apparently new) MMO blogging site here:

http://www.mmobro.com/2016/04/10/vendetta-online-eves-unsung-competitor/

I then submitted it to r/mmorpg (God help us):

Yes well, as for reddit I don't think your over-advocacy does you any favours Phaserlight, but I did think the review was fair except for the part where he makes any comparison to EvE; such comparisons are fraught with problems.

One thing he does quite well though is encapsulates the feeling of discovery that players experience when they first get into the game.

It's another indication that in many respects, the initial experience in VO is extremely well done, but once again we lack the salient features of a game with a strong veteran community.

We have no regular streamers, only one consistently large guild (by old retiree farts, <3 you know who you are) and a pretty weak showing on youtube when it comes to the higher-end content. And yes, I say that as someone who put a really serious effort into creating high-end youtube content, to someone else who did the same thing; nonetheless I think it's an objectively fair assessment.

Incarnate obviously has had trouble monetising subscriptions in such a way that allows time to be spent on high-end content (that is, content aimed at veterans and players who stay to play with regularity for 2+ years).

To this day I'm still not completely sure he recognises the issue of incomplete high-end content as the main barrier to the completeness of VO and it's recognition as a strong competitor to something like EvE or Elite Dangerous. At least a few of the veteran players say that they can forgive the graphics if the content is rich and the experience is perpetually engaging, which at the moment, it is not.

I think he still says there are other technical issues that are more pressing and/or that without the funds injection from one-off-contract-style arrangements like the port to VR, there wouldn't be VO at all.

In any event, we aren't going to get any serious mid-game to endgame content reviews until we launch on Steam. I think, given the volume and ease of feedback you get from Steam, these issues will become much more clearly communicated once the launch happens.

In general I agree with your assessment TRS, although my outlook would be more optimistic; I don't think the devs are unaware of where content is lacking, and I believe there is a plan in place to address this. There is also a fair bit to do in game to keep me occupied, but perhaps my expectations have been tempered by over a decade of play. I'm not looking for a game to replace reality with, but an experience where I can put in a couple hours weekly and have a meaningful impact.

I do think it's unfortunate that VO was the first MMO to support VR HMDs, and there isn't a single VR vid of VO on YouTube. Not sure what to make of that.

Otherwise, you could say I'm a satisfied customer, although I agree there could be more end game content.

To put the above in perspective, I think I've spent more hours in Vendetta Online than all other video games combined, and I started when I was 4 with Broderbund's "The Ancient Art of War".
