advanced plugin repository
I was thinking of setting up a site where players could manage, upload, rate, release, etc. plugins for VO. Is anyone else already doing this? It seems needed badly to organize the various plugins now available.
I also welcome anyone wanting to help, assuming I move forward with this project. If you can't code or make sites, feel free to post suggestions for what you'd like to see.

You mean like http://vo-wiki.com/wiki/Plug-ins ?? Also, some other community sites have tried putting in plugin sections (with limited success, as vo-wiki wins). How will your site stand out from the others?
As long as you provide the ability to create an external link to a plugin (inside the actual plugins secion, as opposed to downloading from your site) I'd put a targetless linky up. I prefer having it downloaded from the actual targetless.com domain as that way I can do my own tracking of how much/often stuff is downloaded (all in one place) and don't have to go update every site when I release and update :p

Thanks for the comments drazed.
I am aware of vo-wiki's list of plugins. For a just a handful of plugins the vo-wiki site is clearly superior.
I don't know what the 'others' have tried apart from what I've seen on vo-wiki and the forums. Right now I am trying to get a sense of whether such a project would be worth it to the community. Regardless, there ought to be more organization, and I'm offering to provide a solution. I certainly would rather spend time playing VO if something like this isn't desired :P
One direction I could see this going would include a multi-platform plugin updater program. Plugin users could download the application that would check periodically for plugin updates and install automatically. The best example of what I am thinking exists in Firefox 3. Some downsides would be that the updater would be separate from VO and only work for plugins posted to the site.
The external link 'feature' isn't a problem, though, it becomes a problem if the external site disappears. So external links could be offered, but I think local links would be recommended. It wouldn't be particularly difficult to display traffic information. Though, it wont be all in one place for you.

I posted this a while back on the suggestions forum: http://vendetta-online.com/x/msgboard/3/20304
Personally, I love the idea but the devs made it abundantly clear that it's up to us to write. So that said, if you really give this thing a shot I'd be glad to help out with the programming or anything else you need. My email is ccoal DOT mail AT gmail DOT com if you want to contact me.
Also, if you want a REALLY good example of how something like this would work, look at Debian's APT system: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Packaging_Tool Debian and its derivatives, (most notably Ubuntu), use it to manage and update every component of the operating system and programs running on it.

I've set up a sourceforge project for the plugins I am working on. It can found at http://sourceforge.net/projects/voplugins/
If anybody wants somewhere to store their own plugins or would like to give me a hand with the ones I've been working on then please drop me an email to mark-vo at flat8.com with your sourceforge details and I'll add you to the project.

with a little example of how to use subversion to obtain the plugins. Its not exactly what you want but its there if you need it.
