CapShip Level Requirements

12»
Mar 22, 2007 TRS link
This is a spin off thread to discuss what the level requirements of various capships should be. I thought it might be better to address all caps at once, to achieve a certain balance.

Ref: http://www.vo-wiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Ships#Capital_Ships

TPG Constellation Heavy Transport
Trident Light Frigate
TPG Teradon Frigate
Heavy Assault Cruiser

We could begin by discussing upper and lower bounds for level requirements. I hesitate to have any requirement above 14, or any combat requirement below 11.

opening suggestion:
Trident: 12/12/12/10/4
Teradon: 13/13/13/7/2
HAC: 14/14/14/8/4
Constellation: 11/11/11/13/6
Mar 22, 2007 Zed1985 link
I would see it more as

Trident: 10/10/10/12/5
Connie: 10/10/10/14/10
Teradon: 12/12/13/0/0
HAC: 14/14/14/0/0

The trident is technically a tradeship more than an attack ship, the Connie is an uber trade ship.

The Teradon and the HAC should be obtainable to players that haven't traded a single minute in their lives. But require some substantial combat experience.

(Personnally it would take me a huge while to get a HAC because I trade more than fight, and if these were the requirements I could only get the Trident, not that I play that much...)

I think, by far, a Teradon is a far better combat ship compared to a HAC due to its smaller size, small turets mixed in with normal death balls, and (by far) the anti-cap ship guns.

It should be more like

HAC: 14/14/14/5/1

Teradon: 15/16/16/0/0

Zed1985: Your requirements for the trident look like they might be in the right range, but the 10 mining for the connie strikes me as excessive. How about we try to keep stuff under 6 mining? And, I think we should be able to safely require at least 4 trading on any cap. 4 mining is also not a very far reach.

ShankTank: The Teradon can probably take a HAC 1v1, but the HAC is more versatile. Few people have levels above 12, and reaching into the 15 and 16 level range could be extreme. We might need to be a little extreme for the high end, but how extreme is the question here.

swift43: This thread is a spin off of a larger plan. Subjects like fighter wings would need to fit into a later stage of the plan. Please refer to the primary thread.

Let me ask you this, was stalinist russia a democratic communist state, with happy children dancing in the streets and dissidents having dignified discussions with non-deranged non-dictators?

Let's start with Trident at 12's nix the mining, and see how much exp the Guides can amass by grinding bots with it. If that's too slow, they need to make cap ship level missions with loads of exp and bump the higher cappys to much higher levels. This way, you can't get from a Trident to a HAC by the standard method.

First off, caps are most desired for trade, and they will make a big dent in trade xp. The trident has like 360cu. It will be a bear to drive by hand, and slower than molasses, but that won't stop traders.

I don't think caps should be all that great for making combat xp. you can go shoot collectors with one, but that might be kinda slow gains. Other than trading, caps are mostly for support, or strategic application. You should not take a cap to border patrol and expect it to survive, but you could take a cap to a nearby sector as a repair depot.

This is not to make caps a necessary part of the game, it is only to make caps available to those that want one. If someone doesn't want a cap, there should be no pressing reason forcing them to get one.

360 is not all that much more than 200, and considering how much slower the Trident is I am almost sure that the new bigger moth is a better Trade ship.

Now the 1000cu Connie...

As for 10 mining being excessive, I don't disagree.

have you people seen the levels of people who did BP?? these level requirements need to be much higher. trade 15 maybe for the trade ships. trade 14 should be bare minimum for any trading cap ship

Hey! Let's grindgrindgrind so we can fly around in capital ships! I think it's a stupid idea to have steep level requirements for them. I would much rather have players complete certain(preferrably difficult) mission trees for the factions that make these ships before they were trusted with them. On top of that, a high cost to make them in the first place. If somehow you manage to get one, there should also be forces who attempt to destroy your ships if you're caught flying it around when you aren't qualified to.

Those are very power efficient capships; 1360 high capacity Ni-Mh could output something like 2KWh
that's enough to run my desktop for 4 hours or so.

Edit: looked at the stuff a second time and can only think this capship will be populated by stoner hippies, rock musicians and discos, you might as well add 5 volcanos, 10 pounds of weed, two kilos of fine heroin and another 5 kilos of nice uncut coke. We might need some pipeweed for those chosen kings too.
