photoshop
does anyone know of a photoshop type application that works on mac and is free?
GIMP is definitely good. I prefer Photoshop (particularly the interface), but free is a nice price.
Photoshop costs money? Oops...
Seriously though, I third the GIMP nomination. If your used to windows photoshop GIMPs interface might be a bit confusing at first but it is fairly in line with mac photoshop just a few less fancy features. The main difference being if your windows are contained by the application or live on there own.
Hmm, also I've found that support for print is a little lacking on GIMP as well. If you need to do lots of RGB/CYMK conversions or whatnot. Then again if your doing that you should prolly just buy photshop. Nothing free is very good at print that I know of.

This is true, GIMP can be a little wonky about printing in some situations. In those cases I just go find a free viewer that can read and print whatever file type I'm dealing with. Otherwise, it's fast and happy.
Failing that, Photoshop gets bundled with digital cameras fairly often. I'm pretty sure I got a version with the Nikon I have at work. You might just ask any gearhead buddies you have.
If anyone remembers the design-a-ship contest (which was entirely player-run and no submitted ships were added to the game, before anyone gets too excited) the little cargo loader pod I did was painted entirely with GIMP (except for the background, which I lifted from a NASA site).

The version included with digital cameras is the feature-limited Limited Edition. It's still good, but not quite the same.
Hmm, if you're talking about Photoshop LE, that was years ago. Many cams and scanners come with Photoshop Elements now, and if you dont need CMYK and certain color channel features, Elements is the best you can get, it has most of the standard features from Photoshop now, far more than the *very* limited LE-versions before.
Retail price is 89$ for the Mac version, I believe.
For batch processing, viewing, im/exporting etc. try graphicconverter, not free but shareware w/o limitatons but the 10-30 sec. countdown for the unregistered version.

ok, you want free? Well....Can't help you there, but Photoshop elements 2 is what I use, and for a fraction of the price too <$60>.
It has a lot of the options that Photoshop has, and you can get other software that works with it to give some serious dynamics.

i can't believe noone mentioned graphicconverter...
Gah, that's no Photoshop substitute. If I want batched conversions, I'll use ImageMagick.
