anyone here play warbirds?

i found this fascinating 'history' of it here, including why it 'died' (oh its still alive, with 100-200 people on it, just like back in 1997 when i was playing it)

Dead?

http://www.totalsims.com/

I played it a lot in thje past, but only the offline missions (slow non-flatrate connection at that time). Warbirds II, the old 2D-Version, was the only dogfight flight-sim with those old machines I knew at that time (never liked modern fighters and games like F-18), and it even ran on my Powermac 7200/75 :D.
Warbirds 3 was amazing when it came out, really nice graphics (much better than the screenshots on the site), but even more system requirements, and the offline-missions became a bit boring.
Hmm, dunno why I never tried the online game, maybe because I thought the community in a WW2-flightsim might be a bit to militaristic or whatever...
And Dawn of Aces with it's old WW1-machines and Zeppelins is still nice too, I don't think there's any other game like it for the Mac.

I played AirWarrior way back when. I liked WWI especially, but would go to WWII and be a gunner or man an anti-aircraft gun if I wanted to relax a bit.

Air Warrior... *That* was the WWII game I played through Compuserve a century ago.

Laika there was no '2d' version of the Warbirds I'm talking about. Apparently there are two different 'warbirds'.

I just said it was 'dead' because... the original developers all left in disgust and the game has roughly the same number of users as it had 7 years ago.

About the militarism, well, you have a point. There were a lot of 'squads' that had 'ranks', and a plethora of 'ribbons' and 'medals' that they gave out to their members, awards, long fiction posts related to all this, etc. And with the squads that only flew Nazi planes, complete with swastika logos, this was a bit weird. It was this armchair morbid fascination of the suburban upper middle class with something that was often a horrible nightmare for those involved in reality.

Yes, sure, there was a 2D-Version of Warbirds II, and it was the only version available for Mac back then (maybe 5 yrs ago?). 3D only for Windows, dunno if there was also a 2D version for Windows PCs.

Edit: Heh, I was just talking about the graphics acceleration, not about the game type. Warbirds 2 for Windows (with acceleration) was beautiful compared to the old-fashioned Mac version.
