response to the 'linux freezing' post
i think there must be some mistake.
as an avid slashdot reader, i know full well that the advantage of linux is stability. linux doesnt crash. or if it appears to crash, you can simply log in from another computer and restart x, or if the network stack has crashed you can log in with an old serial console you have sitting around (only 50 bucks on ebay). either way, linux doesnt crash. this much is a proven fact.
perhaps you were accidentally using windows? i know that some of the new distributions have a very 'windows like' feel, with 'KDE' and 'Gnome' being standard equipment. not like in my day.
no i will tell you, in my day, we had a console, and we were happy for it. we would edit the bitmaps of the text font and we loved it. none of this opengl stuff for us. svgalib was all we needed. it was enough for doom, it should be enough for you young whippersnappers.
you dont need graphics for anything but games, and even that is debatable. give me the old nethack. or maybe the old hunt the wumpus. zork. infocom. dungeon crawling in text.
Im not so sure this 'space sim' thing is such a good idea anyways. why would you want to have the mouse control your look-at point when you can just type in 'look left' and 'look right'? kids these days have bad enough typing skills anyways, we should be giving them more typing not less typing. look at how far we are behind in education from other countries, like china and taiwan. if we had students typing instead of mousing and looking at pretty graphics, maybe we wouldnt have lost vietnam. maybe 9/11 would have never happened.
ill tell you what, i think that even the 80x25 displays are a little too 'graphical' for my taste. i mean thats graphics right there. you can make pictures on it cant you? what about the 'true meaning'. . . which can only be expressed in text and so forth and so on. the 'true structure', mathematical formulas, not rhyme, rythym and song of blizzarous doilies on the screen.
paper printouts thats what we need. or bollocks that, even letters are too pretty what with all the laser printing and so forth now days. bloody waste of ink if you ask me.
what we need is braille terminals. thats it. and not those fancy 4 line terminals. thats almost picture-enabling right there. i can easily imagine some rebellious hateful-of-authority hacker making those displays print out 'feeling-pictures' for hapless users who would grow to love anything that makes life 'easier' for them.
'easier' in the short run, but in the long run, after the bomb, and the asteroid hits, what then? they wont be pining for any pretty pictures or mice then, except to burn for warmth and boil down for food.
no, i tell you, the only way we can truly be prepared for the survival of the human race is to force all computers back to be single 'on/off' lights, and make them ugly industrial lamps, nothing fancy or pleasing to the eye. make them break down frequently too, so that people have to touch the electrodes to their tongue once the tungsten filament burns out.
that will teach these young whippersnappers the value of what its like to learn a machine from the inside out. you gotta be tough to survive these days! even when playing 'games'.
