LinuxWorld Boston - Feb 15-17

Dec 21, 2004 thurisaz link
just a reminder for all the penguin-minded VO pilots out there...

Exhibit Hall passes are free if you pre-register 0_0

--do we want to have some sort of VO linux-users meeting?? I seem to remember hearing that a lot of us live in the Boston area..

Ooh! I almost forgot! Bump this near the beginning of Feb. :D

Sweet! I hope I'm not busy then...

I'm not a linux user, but I *do* live in the boston area... and like the idea of having an excuse to meet other vendetta players.

I've been trying to get my mother to switch to linux, but she's a bit too lazy...

Linux can be a pain in the ass to switch to (or easy to switch to), depending on what distro you choose. Actually, I may wind up going with FreeBSD...

**bumpy-bump**

here's the (free!) pre-registration link: http://www.linuxworldexpo.com/live/12/register

The exhibit halls are open 10AM-5PM Tues-Weds, and 10-4 on Thurs

..do we want to try scheduling a 1/2hour-hour block for a Vendetta meet-n-greet?
Feb 03, 2005 roguelazer link
Hmm. This could be very difficult, since Boston is about an hour away and school doesn't get out 'till 2:30.
Feb 03, 2005 Tyrdium link
W00t, it's the day after all my test and papers are due! :D

Hmmm... School gets out at 3, and that's at BU... Taking the T into Hynes... I can probably be there by 4. Assuming, that is, that I can go.

*bumpity*

So, who's going?
Feb 13, 2005 roguelazer link
Not me.
Feb 14, 2005 thurisaz link
sorry for keeping mum so long... I'll be around the floor most of the day tomorrow, and might pop in a bit on Weds, as I'll be working in the city... you might know me by a green L.L. Bean parka and a black brief-bag with an EMC logo on it... Oh, and if you see a guy that answers to "thurisaz", that's a pretty sure bet, too :P

Wow, that was B2B-oriented. I got to talk to some of the LTSP and Gentoo guys, though. Oh, and I got a Fedora Core 3 DVD... :D
Feb 15, 2005 thurisaz link
lol, that WAS a DVD... thought it was just a plain CD-ROM...

other cool things I found:
* Full Version of Novell Linux Desktop 9 (I assume it's full...)
* Open Circulation version of Xandros
* Workstation version of VMWare (had to let them scan my badge... liscense key is apparently going to be emailed to me..)
*TONS more random .iso's (Debian, Mepis, CentOS, etc.)
* lots of cool schwag (pens, flashlight, Tux plushie, caffeinated gum[!!], T-shirts...)

Tyrdium is right, though, in that it was VERY enterprise-oriented.. I felt a bit out of place as a mostly-hobbyist

Oh, and 2005 is apparently the Year of the Virtual Server

-PS - For all of you that won't be able to make it, I'll prbably try to host a VO meet-n-greet some time at Tecschange, in Roxbury (a non-profit I volunteer at :o)
Feb 16, 2005 roguelazer link
Roxbury in what state? :P And when? Mayhap you could wait until I have my car?
Feb 16, 2005 Tyrdium link
Dammit, I missed the swag... Free Tux plushie?!?
Feb 17, 2005 paedric link
Just how many Roxburys are there anyway?

Edit: Guess it wasn't such a silly question at that. There is a Roxbury in Conneticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hapshire, Maine, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Pretty much the only northeastern state that doesn't have a Roxbury is Rhode Island.

I was there all three days, but I hadn't discovered V-O yet.

In fact, I was so inspired that I came home and installed Ubuntu. Then I was reading a thread on 'best linux games' on the Ubuntu forums and...here I am!
Feb 21, 2005 Tyrdium link
I'm typing this on Fedora Core 3, just installed it on my T40 from a free DVD I got at LinuxWorld. :D

Anywho, assuming my parents are okay with it (since this would be at an organization, I think they would be), I'm up for a meet-n'-greet. When would it be?
